Hi guys

I know there is already a thread on this below but I didn't want to hijack it. I have a client with fibre in Protea Heights and he has speed trouble. During the morning it flies at around 28mb but in the evening it absolutely crawls. We have tried telkom, Axxess and also Afrihost account's and they are pretty much the same when testing. These are all capped accounts.

The tests were done on a laptop with an ethernet cable. Is it possible that the *fibre dslam* could become conjested? I was under the impression that fibre didn't have the same issues that DSL has.

In short - yes. Congestion is possible via Openserve fibre, at least. Not sure if via other providers too. I had a similar speed issue a month or two ago, shortly after installation in Rondebosch. Eventually after my ISP (MWEB) investigated with OpenServe, they explained that it was "congestion"on the OpenServe network at peak times. A fault was logged and it was eventually fixed 2 or 3 weeks later. I'm not sure what the technical explanation is - with ADSL it was congestion at the exchange, I'm sure that with Fibre there's another explanation. I was equally surprised that it was possible and may simply be down to the way OpenServe deploys its fibre.

Edit: I see it's with VumaTel. May be a similar explanation.

Vumatel does not have Fibre in Protea Heights yet, they are planning on rolling out beginning of next year. Chances are your friend is in Sonkring area, some houses there have Fibre with Openserv, and as previous poster said they can have congestion.

With Vuma you get an uncontended strand to the datacenter from what they said at the townhall meeting.

Kloon, yes you are right. Apologies, I meant Protea Heights.

It's not vumatel if you can just try different accounts.
