Hi,

I see WA sells & bundles a Zyxel router that says it supports fibre, the "Zyxel SBG3300-N Router" @ http://www.webafrica.co.za/routers/ (further down the page).

Does this simply mean it has a WAN port like many other routers have that you can dial through? i.e. a regular RJ45 plug - or is it something else that is unique to fibre?

I can't see how it supports fiber without an SFP port, unless you use a media converter. Which essentially means the router itself does not actually support fiber.

Your fibre will terminate at your premises with some sort of terminating unit with a RJ45 jack. You can then connect a standard router with a RJ45 WAN port to it.

The Telkom fibre has a CPE which the fibre terminates at. You then connect a router to it with a ethernet cable. The router needs to dial a PPPOE connection over this.

Most routers that have a WAN port should be able to do this.

But yeah nothing actually fibre about these routers.

The trend amongst FTTH providers is to provide a CPE point device that outputs ethernet.

Don't think fibre routers are the norm at the moment.

true. However most situations it is Broadband over fibre still.

Get Mikrotik with SFP port or mikrotik fibre to copper converter.

I had my fibre installed yesterday with Telkom - just took the line stand alone from WA - and Telkom supplies the ONT unit. This is connection to the CPE point via fibre line. WA supplies a modem which is prefigured to only work on one port with the ONT supplied by Telkom. This is according to them.

So it's wall unit -> ONT -> Modem

Apparently the modem and ONT RJ45 jacks are locked or configured to only work with one another...don't know how much belief I have in that.

Anyway. Getting the modem tonight and will be running that modem to my own router.

Well I can confirm that ANY router which can use a PPPOE connection can be used when paired with the ONT unit Telkom installs.

No special routers or other rubbish needed.

Just run the LAN from the ONT to your router of choice, input details into the PPPOE connection tab and you are good to go.

Running the ONT to a TP-LINK WDR4300 without any problems.

We have know quite a while that the ONT will work with any router capable of PPPoE over ethernet.

The ONT is locked down. Only port 1(confirmed with existing setups) and the telephone jack(rumour) works on it, Not any of the other ports work. Not the wifi or anything else except those 2 ports is active on the ONT.
Go plug your router into another port of the ONT to check. No idea where you got the idea that the router was locked down.

That's what I was told by both Telkom as well as WebAfrica. Thought it sounded suspect, but what do I know about this stuff anyway. *shrug*

Telkom is busy installing a Fibre connection at one of my clients. They have a mail server onsite and with DSL we had a /29 Static IP pool with a rented Billion router.
When i asked Telkom to supply a /29 the response i got as as follows:

Hi Colleagues

Please note that at the moment we have only launched /32 IP range (only one usable IP @ R45.00). The other ranges /29 and /28 (which are 5 usable IPs and 13 Usable IP have not been launched yet.
For the 3 sites the customer will only be able to purchase 1 per site per username. Secondly the customer will need to buy a Zyxel SBG3300 modem if currently not in the package mentioned below by "Name Removed". The other supported modem is a Cisco 887 VAG which was tested and found to be compatible with Static IP addresses. Customer is allowed to try other modems/devices supporting L2TP. Lastly please send the customer the attached user guide to assist with the configurations of the two modem mentioned above.

Way to Go Telkom!

Maybe they realised it time to get on par with technology trends?

I think it is, at least to business customers.

Maybe give them a call (i know i'm asking a lot)
