Hi, hoping someone can offer advice.

I had money transferred from Europe last night using Inter Africa. Today I called to confirm the documentation needed to collect the funds and ran into a problem when it came to proof of address.

I'm renting a cottage and no utilities are in my name, and I don't have a lease agreement. I thought that a letter of confirmation from the owner would be sufficient, together with a utility bill from said owner. This appears to meet the requirements of the banks.

Inter Africa has however demanded the actual identity document of the owner, or a certified copy thereof. The property owner is unwilling to provide this, citing the risk of identity theft. The funds are required to meet end-of-month commitments, including, incidentally, the said property owner's rent.

What is the best course to follow? How difficult is it to have the transaction reversed, and to have the money resent to someone else, and how long will this take?

Any advice would be appreciated.

That's a toughie, aren't the funds transferred into your Sa bank account, whats Inter Africa got to do with things once it's there?

I no longer have an SA bank account. The funds are to be collected.

Just make a fake lease agreement and get some mates to sign it. FICA is ridiculously easy to get around.

According to a friend of a friend I briefly met once, the following also works

Take a mate to a police station and have him swear an affidavit that you live with him. Provide his utilities/address/id. Profit.

I'd try the most legit avenues first. Be careful you may find the money getting locked up and very hard to get hold of if they decide to investigate the fica docs you provide. Your landlord is perhaps being a chop, you are probably legally entitled to him providing you the necessary docs incl copy of ID to prove you are resident on his property.

Fully agree on the legitimate avenues, some of the above posters are made of sterner stuff than I am.

Not sure whether or not landlord is legally obliged to comply, but one would certainly have thought that, given the circumstances, common decency would have prevailed.
