Trying to decide between these two...

Never owned a diesel before, what are the pros and cons?

same price for both so looking for opinions and/or experience on which is:

A: more economical
B: more reliable
C: better in the long run

I'll go with the tdci for the torque. It also has some impressive L/km

Depends how long you intend to hold onto the car, and where you use it.

If you intend to do lots of city driving (not highway), then go diesel. If the world turns to dimethyl ether (more likely than hydrogen cars IMO) as the future alternative power source, diesel engines work without any modifications to the engine (only need to replace fuel tank with LPG cylinders - you'll get something silly like 2000km).

We've got a diesel for the first time (bukkie, not a hot hatch), and it's been quite a nice car to drive. Certainly less foot flat and blast off, but city driving is fine with it.

Ask to test drive both and see which one you prefer.

Personally I would go with the diesel. For no other reason than the known reliability of those engines. I'm not sure how well those tiny highly-strung petrol engines will cope in the long run. My 2c. I drive a diesel car and therefore I may just be a little biased :D

Which way did you go?
I had the same dilemma and went for the Ecoboost, a week ago.
Be keen to compare notes.
Cheers
Richard

Must say I was drive in an Ecoboost the other day and I was absolutely blown away by the car itself as well as Ford in general having had a very **** experience with them many years ago.

I figure those two will be equally reliable and last equally long and it's ultimately just a question of performance vs economy.

As always go drive both and then decide.

Just as well as any small highly-strung motorcycle engine that will last for years.

3-cylinder technology is nothing new and is proven tech so is running a turbo by now. The two together make for a great combination.

Don't have any experience with the Ecoboost or Tdci, but my wife drives a petrol 1.4 Figo, and had a 1.4 Fiesta before that, and their fuel economy was nothing to write home about.

I bought a Mercedes C350 CDI earlier this year, after upgrading from a C200 Kompressor, and am astonished.
Pull aways in Economy mode are a bit laggy with the diesel compared to the petrol, but econmy is much better.
With the 200 I would get about 500km to a 60L tank, with the diesel I easily get 800+km from the same size tank.

Diesel all the way for me from now on.

Drove a mate's Figo TDCI the other day and my wife owns the 1400 petrol. The TDCI is a piece of shyte :o Won't buy that given the choice between the 1.4 and the TDCi.
