Fifa frets over 2010 stadiums

However, reading up about it, I think that you're imposing your own agenda on the facts:
Colombia was originally chosen as hosts by FIFA in June 1974. However, the Colombian authorities declared in November 1982 that they could not afford to host the World Cup under the terms that FIFA demanded.[wikipedia]

But when Columbian organizers withdrew their application in 1983, citing bankruptcy, Mexico, which hosted Pele's swansong in 1970, stepped in and became the first nation to stage two World Cups.[your own: cbc.ca]​

Every other source I've read since also gives this as the reason. Only the Free Republic and some Australian blogs mention crime being a problem in Columbia in 1986, and then it is only to make some point about SA.

If I remember correctly I did make a solitary post on that thread, but I was not in the country, when the furore happened, and so didn't have facts on the matter, and that is why I didn't post anything there, does not mean I either agree, disagree or can't argue with those facts or opinions

The terms are clear and have always been. They include financial guarantees and a legal framework to be in place - South Africa has already complied, or is complying with these terms.
 
The Terms are fine... but who is paying? FIFA, SA tax payers and China. in essence, SA is being sold off piece by piece to China so that South Africa can host a 30 day soccer event.
 
Green Point stadium is going ahead at last. Local paper has confirmed this. Thank goodness. Damn whinging Green Point residents have been quieted at last..

Apparently. Only saw the newspaper article the other day. Either way , I am happy! WC2010 here we come!
 
One of the benefits of the 2010 WC will be increased tourism. But there may be a downside.

The question is: How many of those "tourists" from countries in Africa will decide that SA is a nicer place to stay in rather than return back to their own countries?

Think about it. There would never be a better time for illegal immigrants to slip into prosperous SA with the excuse that they are just coming to see the WC and then they decide to stay.

How many "tourists" will come?

We were given the world cup to host and from the very outset the naysayers were egging us on to fail.

The FIFA World Cup is probably the second best thing (other than democracy) that has happened to this country and we have people that believe we should be taught a lesson and loose it. How quaint.

The world cup is the single biggest driver in the battle to sort out all our infrastructure woes, including Telecoms, yet people want it to fail. Bizarre!

It is events like this that enable governments to invest massive amounts of money in infrastructure projects.

We have had 2 sets of international visitors from our business partners in the last month, from France and from Germany. Both these groups of people seem confident that the 2010 world cup will be back in Germany. This sickens me.

Failure to host this event is not n option, it will do serious damage to everyone here and the country as a whole.

I find it sickening that a sports event, even if watched by billions, has to be the motivator to sort telecoms, infrastructure and crime out. I just find that too bizarre for words. It's as if THE PEOPLE are not GOOD ENOUGH. It has
to be a WORLD CUP, it has to be an excercise in vanity not an action for the
good of the people. The world does not care if the world cup is a success. They will not be impressed if SA shows stadiums which rival the G8 nations
of USA, Japan and Germany. It's an Idi Amin mentality, dictator buys many fancy limos, builds a golden palace, etc all to show off how rich and successful his country is while it's people starve. The Soviet Union did this,
they invested most of their GDP in military spending and the space race,
and while they were so-so on par with the Yanks in these two fields,
the Yanks had them beaten in everything else under the sun.

Besides the World Cup is an event for the whole world. If we screw it up,
it won't be fair on everyone else. You don't see the other 100 odd nations
crying and having inferiority complexes because they have no chance
of even getting the bid to host the cup, yet we may possibly screw it up
for them too.
