FIFA World Cup

If the shyt hits the fan in Zim

There will be No SA 2010 anyway ;)

It's pretty ironic that a world cup is being held in an apparently soccer mad country, where the soccer standard is next to zero.....

Which is a bad thing, and I repeat my statement...

The guavamint will beef up security for the duration of the WC.... why exactly is that a naive point of view when it has been stated by the guavamint.

The govt is not going to... the world cup will be taken away....

And on what do you base that, other than your own opinion... when every sentiment from all the people in charge of that decision are stating otherwise?

if you can't see how everything is going, then you're just plainly blind..... you think all is well behind the scenes.... ?

I know all is not well behind the scenes, but the cost to both FIFA and SA is beyond imagining... They're both commited to the event happening here.

If the government beefs up security, it will be at the expense of us. If they don't it will be at the expense of the tourists. Either way, the government wins and innocents die. Yeah there is crime in every country, lets not compare the crime in first world countries to our own, cause we are off the chart. I also wouldn't expect them to hold the WC in Iraq because of violence, so why here? also, ignorant tourists don't understand the senseless killing and rape aspect. They assume that if they obey the criminals they will get off having only lost some money. They probably see that as the worst thing that can happen. After all, if Fifa and the SA government say its safe, then there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not an ardent soccer fan, but still welcome the opportunity to host this vent because I had hope(d) that it would force the governmint into addressing the crime problem, but unfortunately they don't seem to have a plan in this regard.

They will not be permitted to merely beef up security at the time - they will have to demonstrate ahead of time that they have a handle on the out of control crime problem - for this reason I won't support any campaign to remove the SWC - although dwindling, I still have hope that this crime issue will be addressed.
I guess the governmint fears losing votes if they were to honestly address the rampant crime problem.

Losing it will be what knocks the sense into them (hopefully). Right now, all our Government sees are huge $$$ signs. Like Pixie22 sais, it's all at the expense of people that the Government clearly doesn't care about.

If they did, we wouldn't need a World Cup to justify investment and to show what a strong nation we are. This will be South Africa's downfall. It's all going to get worse after the World Cup, cause what else will our politicians spend their time doing?

Fighting crime is so boring. Maybe we can have something like the ballerina world cup after that?

Do you remember how ironic when it was held in the US in '94. I bet more than half the population had never heard of the the sport called soccer. There wasn't even a proffessional league there.
But Fifa knew they would make lots of money there. World Cups can have little to do with the host country's football ability/madness. The bulk of spectators come from abroad anyway, so it's no big deal

Here's a proposition: Let's suspend all international sports until the gvt sorts out the crime problem.
Let's see. no super 14, no springboks, no proteas, no bafana, no swimming,
Hey then we would have come full circle i.e. competing locally only amongst ourselves. What do you chaps think?

We were forced to do that during an apartheid, and the crime stats are a pretty good reason. Too many people willing to throw a party when there is still serious sht going down. Aslong as its not happening to them or their immediate family, its not a big enough problem yet to get their undivided attention.

crime crime crime.. you bunch of pus**ys

Sadly, I was wrong - wishful thinking on my part.
