Figo 2014 Petrol Air Filter Help

I am a new at working on cars. To save money I decided to service my wifes 2013 petrol Figo myself. Most of the service is pretty simple. However the air filter is another story.

The engine cover (with the duratec and ford branding) that contains the air filter has 2 bolts at the front and seems to be attached at 2 points at the back that I cannot get to or even see properly.

Can anyone offer advice on how to remove it so I can replace the air filter.

And if anyone else feels this is a very silly design it will make me feel better about my competence.

After you have removed the bolts there are holes underneath which the box slot into, they are four IIRC, sometimes the rubber stick making the box very difficult to remove. In short you remove all the bolts and lift while at the same time wiggling the box until it comes loose, it will come loose on the others but the back two tends to stick, it could be even better if you have some wd40 or similar to loosen them up. Remove everything that is isn the way soi that you have a view of what you are dealing with, even the coolant bottle can be moved out of the way.

The video was also very helpful as all the videos I found online were not the exact same as mine. The one above could be my engine.

I really did give the housing on my Figo a good couple of solid tugs to try and remove it but did not want to break anything. Will use some Q20 and try again.

I had the same problem while doing a service on one the other day, it just requires a little patience.

@ OP.

While you have the filter housing off, you might give it and the engine bay a slight clean-up.

Third time lucky. A bit of Q20 and jiggling and a solid tug and it came off. . Air filter successfully changed. A round of applause for taking 3 attempts to do the easiest part of a service.

I will certainly give the engine a bit of a clean.

Another question from the bottom of the newbie pile. Is there a trick to getting the spark plugs out? Using a standard spark plug spanner I could not shift those buggers yesterday.

The same q20, give them a good spray and allow is to soak through, nothigas irritating as people who over tighten things unnecessarily, I struggled with an oil filter thr other day, what would have been a 10min job ended up taking hours.

Just remember to loosen the plugs you turn them anti clockwise. I am not saying this to insinuate anything, but my wife and some other people I have met always try loosening screws etc. the wrong way round.

Another good investment, if you are into more DIY projects on cars, would be a torque wrench. This will help so that
fasteners and especially spark plugs are not over-tightened.

Have you ever tried to loosen or screw on a gas cylinder regulator? I don't know if there is something wrong with mine but it works the other way, I once spent the whole 30 mins trying to screw it using the tried and tested clockwise rule with no luck, deduced that there must be something not compatible with the treads, went ro rhe shops to buy a new one, only to find ths the damn thing screws on anti clockwise, I was very annoyed with myself and whoever decided to go against the clockwise rule.

I think you have to invest in a new pair of glasses. An inspection of the thread would have shown that there are exceptions to the rule for safety's sake, especially in the gas environment.

All gas cylinders that contain flammable gas should have left hand thread.
The exceptions are small cylinders like Cadac and Alva. They cater for the masses.

Here's a plan for you then, use it now and in future, the most important things to do in a service is the air filter, oil and oil filter as well as the petrol filter. Spark plugs while important won't damage your engine, dirty oil/oil filter and the air filter could.

You will get a spark plug socket that has a rubber on the end to lift the plugs out.



This makes it easy to remove and insert plugs. You don't want to drop the plug as it may change the gap size and you will have a miss.

Allways use copper compound on the plugs (little bit) or any bolt you ever remove.
Do not over tighten find the torque specification and use a good torque wrench. If you don't have one as soon as the spakplug washer seats ad half a turn.
