File copy software with a twist.

Copy it to USB 3 external, attach external to back of MyCloud and use the Desktop App to copy items across.

EDit: if your device is new and you upgraded the firmware to v4, before you copy anything onto he device I recommend you go to utilities and perform a Factory Restore.

Then copy your files etc.

I had to do this as the MyCloud 4TB I had, out the box i updated the firmware and copied my stuff on at speeds of 20MB/s, it got slower as time went by.

Removed my stuff, did FULL reset, zeros the hdd, I'm now getting copying speeds of between 50MB/s and 91MB/s.

I thought also of moving it temporarily but there are no empty ports on router. Stuff plugged in there is needed every day so can't even remove one.

Copying to DVD isn't viable, neither is Bluray at the moment.
I have not had any speed problems with the WD Cloud but I suspect my lan/wifi speed is the bottleneck and no matter what I do to the MyCloud would change that.

I've got an old 200GB drive with a 2.5 enclosure so I can use that to transfer every day. Will take longer than if I had a 1TB but not nearly as long as copying through the network. Plus I don't have to spend any extra $$$.

All online cloud storage is severly limited and is useful in my opinion only for photos. Most Cellphones upload them automatically anyway these days.

Is there any good software for making incremental backups? the stuff i've got on there is a bunch of files and folders, not a single compressed file as that is useless to me as I cannot download what I want onto my other PC, phone and tablet when I need it.

Something that will for example check a certain folder on my PC where I store my important stuff and compare that to what is already on MyCloud and transfer only the new stuff.

Then it will drastically decrease the load on network and new stuff would copy quite quickly.

Cant you connect it via USB to your PC?

Highly unlikely.

As far as I can tell the USB 3 port at the back is to expand storage or to copy to and from the device using external drive.
Perhaps it might work as a print server as well, but i'm really not sure.

*edit*
Do you mean the Cloud device? or my printer?

Either won't work.

The four ports are used as follows:
1) Internet - from Airgrid outside
2) To NanoStation - Bridge
3) Xerox printer - Network only *too far from PC anyway.
4) PC

None of these can be connected via USB to my PC to free up a port on the router
Whoops. made a mistake and put the MyCloud as Nr4.
Nr4 is a second PC that is used often as well.

Copy from work to usb external drive
Copy from usb external to cloud drive
Done :)

Yes as I said before that might be the best option,

But I still need incremental backup software to transfer new files.

Bittorrent Sync should work regardless of OS installed. It will also automatically resume when you turn the PC back on.

You could also use Microsoft Sync Center built into Windows 7+. Once it's enabled, you go to the shared folder, right-click, select "Always available offline".
Then you set your PC to Work Offline, move all the data into that folder (being offline, it won't try to copy it, just move it into the local folder). Once that is done, you can enable Work Online and all the data will sync in the background. It will look like it's on the WD Cloud even though it's still on your PC.
You can add extra columns into your explorer view to see which files have already been synced across and which are still waiting.
It will likely take longer than a copy, but if you update files, it will automatically sync the updates.
The other benefit is that it will always maintain a local copy so if your network goes down or your nas fails, you can keep working on your local copy.

Why not temporayly move the WD cloud device and use a switch to give your router "extra" ethernet ports?

I'm trying to steer clear of stuff that I would need to buy in order to make this work.
I don't have an extra switch so that cannot be done. Sure they are like R60 on Takealot, but with shipping it isn't worth it,

Currently using the 200GB drive to make backups every day, slow going but I'll get there.

I'll give that M$ Sync centre a go when its all done copying.

Thanks a lot.

Each to his own, I would rather get a switch at Matrix or whatever budget computer shop you have on the corner, and get it done in one session. But if you are happy ... , I am not going to argue. Enjoy!! :)

My closest computer shop is 200km away so that is why I would rather get it from takealot.
Shipping is cheaper than petrol.
