File Server Chassis

x2

Got one myself. 3x120mm or 140mm fans can be fitted in front quite easily. Before I had that case the hard-drive were sitting around 50 degrees with a single 120mm fan blowing air on the drives, in the CM590, 36 degrees (that is on 6x2 TB Seagate low power drives, values retrieved using S.M.A.R.T). All the PC hardware and PSU also run much cooler now because everything is very well spaced out.

To use the CM590 will require 3.5" -> 5.25" drive bay converters however (can fit up to 9 hard-drives using them).

Most other cases don't have fans blowing on the hard-drives, which is good, if you like your drives to run hot or have good airflow in the room.

I checked the temps on my NAS box (HAF932 with 8 1.5TB drives) and its constantly sitting @ 30degC...

The stock fan config of the HAF932 works wonders ;)

I have been using the xpreadetor, but I'm seriously considering going rack.
I have 10 drives in my case ATM and I am already struggling with heat. I wanted to add another 2 but I dont think the heat will cope.

Otherwise I need to weigh up the costs of just replacing my 1 TB's and 2 TB's with 3 Tb's. That will give me an extra 18 TB but I think it may end up being way more expensive than another case.

I took the rack route and had my black IBM 42u delivered around lunchtime yesterday :D
Got 2 * 4u chassis with it and a third on the way. Hold 9 drives each.
Ordering the rails for them today.

Took me until 20H00 to get this thing setup

Today I am moving the contents of the one box into a chassis.
Tues I am collecting 2 x Quad Xeon 3.04Ghz bundles for the other 2 chassis. Once content is migrated I will sell off the 2 boxes these replace.

Long overdue upgrade. And sexy too :D
Not to mention the floor space gained in my home office.

Pricing of cabinet or stuff I will sell off?
I will go with cabinet :)

The 42u with 2 shelves and back extension was R1,800. Bought off a guy from carbonite who responded to my wanted ad.
The chassis are 1 x 4U-500 and 1 x 4U-600. They are at Sybaritic for around a grand each. He charged me R350. The third is coming after this week but don't know if it is 500 or 600 yet.

Ordered fans and rails for the 3 chassis this morning. Sybaritic shipping them tomorrow.

The Xeon sets I am also getting off someone from Carbonite. 3 months old.
They are quad core 3.2Ghz, Mobo and 8GB RAM. R2k per set. Flipping cheap.
Getting them on Wed only though.
Will go get exact specs now...

EDIT: the Xeon procs and mobos are at the end of the OP here.
