Need a spec for a file server (also used for backups), have received quotes for dual quads (25 users max) which is way overkill.

Could really use some suggestions, presently using a X2 4400 with 2 gig ram over a 54Mb wireless network, old foggies bitching that acad file loads to slow :p

All systems accessing the server have own software so only data loaded and saved when finished.

Who on earth uses wireless for doing remote backups on a file server ???.

lol i know just saying what is presently happening :)

As i say suggestions most welcome, for a gaming machine or a rendering machine i can answer my own questions but for servers they just irritate me :)

Yup that is what i told them but no they think expensive will make computer illiterate (spelling) draftsmen computer literate :p

So lose the wireless and stick with the X2 seems to be a good idea ?

54Mb wireless network = bottleneck
couple of scsi's won't be bad either
2 fibre channels - now your cooking, bring on the data :)

ummm would a core 2 duo not be better than a x4400?

im sure they the same price or the amd is more expensive

Killa, the company already has the machine running, so there is no cost involved. Another thing is, since this is purely a file-server, CPU will make virtually no difference to performance.

A definite requirement is RAID, and depending on speed needs, SCSI RAID. If speeds arent that important, then just do a 3-4 drive SATA-2 RAID-5 array.

Gigabit ethernet with a decent switch is also a bonus.

Yup machine presently in place but will change the hdd's and the network very soon :)
