I use to select certain words on a spam filter that I saw here on myBB. But on android 6 you can only block a number, and I block one a day . Like Lotto have a lot of numbers. I see there is apps that can also do this spam filtering. Is there a good free app or a way to still enable a "text filter.?

Thank you

For Android I haven't found one yet that's works as well as the one that came with my phone. I think there are options if you root your phone. My LG G4 has a spam filter built in that works great. No more junk messages or MTN adverts.

Truecaller has a sms spam filter. Its free with some adds or you could just pay the subscription.

Truecaller
Nice app that. It shares your whole contact list with the world. This allows anyone to input a number and get a heap of info about the owner (name linked to telephone number, FB, Twitter, email,....). If you read the T&C's it specifically says that you have all your contacts permission to share their data with Truecaller. Make sure you get ALL their permissions and direct them to the unlist option on their site.

Not only contact lists, but also everything linked to the contact in your contact list.

Sorry I was editing my post.

Also it collects snippets from multiple users. So calling your wife "Honey" in your contacts won't stop them getting the real name from someone else.

It is amazing how many people don't know about this and continue to plug Truecaller.

Yawn not this again. Who cares?

I care. My details are not for sharing to a company that makes a profit from those details. And especially without my consent.

You should read up on the various personal information protection legislation in EU, US, SA and other countries. TrueCaller is skirting these laws by putting the onus on the user to confirm that they have your consent to share your information with them. How many users of Truecaller actual know this by reading the T&C? I know a lot of people that use this software but not one has asked my permission when I know that I am listed in their contacts. Most, like some of you, don't even realise that they are sharing their contacts.

As soon as POPI is fully implemented in SA and I can actually do something about the bull**** spam sure. Until then nobody's data is safe in any case.

I'm just speculating here. But a Spam blocking service, that is free, gets money from somewhere selling something. That something is your information.

In this case you can either subscribe or if you have the free version they use adds. So as far as I can see they sell users. The adds have not been very intrusive so far so I do not mind.

But we don't know. Doesn't matter anyways. I use Should I Answer?, but don't think it has spam word blocking.

No we dont really know. Considering the amount of information that floats around the about each of us I doubt Truecaller makes much of a difference. I mean I have an email address with 19GB of online storage and a phone running a mobile operating system all developed using funds made by selling my information in the for of targeted advertisements. Where do you draw the line exactly? Would you rather hide your phone number or the fact that sometimes you like to buy used lady undergarments off the internet?
