Final two in SNO race
26/10/2004 16:26 - (SA)

Pretoria - Two bidders remain in the race to acquire the final 26% stake in the second network operator (SNO), Communication Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced in Pretoria on Tuesday.

She said three parties had been interested but one had not met deadlines and so was disqualified.

"I therefore, confirm that the two applicants who will indeed participate in the closed tender process to determine who will take up the unallocated 26 percent equity stake in the SNO are... Old Mutual Asset Managers and Tata Africa Holdings (SA) Pty Ltd."

Bidders, among various other conditions, had to own R5bn worth of assets in order to qualify.

Matsepe-Casaburri said the process was well underway and expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Good - as promised, Dr Ivy has made a firm decision, finally. I like both these players - they've certainly got the bux and can invest in an alternative infrastructure, as well as buy-in the required competencies. Things are looking up, folks!

I hope auntie Ivy lets the SNO control half of the SAT3 cable.

Folks, in case you haven't realised it, there are plenty of incestuous relationships amongst board members of organisations that are in competition with each other (ostensibly), or that have a supplier/provider relationship - this is par for the course, and has been so for more years than I care to remember. The worse evidence of this occurred in the previous dispensation, thanx to the Broederbond culture. So it's not surprising that there is now a 'Swartbond' situation, to coin a phrase. Mervyn King and his cohorts made bold to address governance issues of this kind - the 'King II Report' - though it would seem, according to Martin Welz, that some of the authors of that report are just as tarnished...
