Never had a bike and decided on a 2010 BMW 650 GS - The Twin motor.

Phoned BMW with the VIN to check ownership and to see if they have any accidents on record.

Physically the bike seems to be in great condition.

Anything that I need to check?

There's 2 types of bikers. Those who haven't fallen, and those who will.

Just be careful showing off. A friend of mine thought it'd impress some girl in a car or whatever and when he accelerated from the robot they were at, he hit some sand on the road and crashed.

This looks like a good place to sidle in with the two big biking aphorisms: "dress for the fall, not the ride" and "ATGATT" Oh, and buy your gear for how well it protects you, not primarily for how good you think you look in it.

GS is a good bike. If it is your first ever motorbike, seriously be careful. these babies have a whole arsenal of power. Stay off the painted lines on the road especially in the rain.

i have had a few crappy bikes in the past, 125, 180, then in January i finally bought my first proper one, i got the Suzuki DL-650 08' i will never look back.

in just over one month i have put 3000km on the clock, maxed it out at a speed thought impossible for that bike and most probably got some crazy fines coming.

yeah i agree, dress properly, DO NOT WEAR SHORTS AND T'S they will just rip off when you bail and then not only will you lose your clothes but you will stand a chance losing "your junk", wear something protective, if its hot outside, wear a summer jacket. dont take a chance, skin grafts are damn expensive....

but ja all the negative aside: HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Great bike.like the others said, get ATGATT - (wear) All The Gear All The Time.get a beginners training course (the think bike forum has a section on that with contact details.will teach you good habbits.join a bike forum or 2.check your ego/temper at the door before riding.act like everything on the road is trying to kill you.

how much for the bike?how many km on it?you could ask bmw how much it costs to check it out for you.

Buy a CBR 1000 you chop!!!

And you on a bike. OML!!! Maybe that guy will kick your bike too :) LOL Grappie

Hmmffff CBR 1000 **yaawn** ... CBR 1000's are for guys that cant handle the power of Suzuki GSXR 1000's !!!:D

lol ye, the 650 isn't that high. the 800 is a bit high for me tho.

2010, 18k on the clock. Paid R59k with the top box.

As soon as I figure out how to ride the damn thing I'll come show off a bit :)

Have you never had a bike?

Dude, if you have never been a rider, seriously, lock it up and go for proper lessons before getting on that thing. Just to scare you a little and to develop some respect for bikes, go to the think bike forum and browse the "biker down" and "the fallen" threads.

The other day in Parktown I stepped out to get lunch and I see this tiny black girl in full leathers getting onto a CBR600. I thought to myself, cool, never seen a black girl on a 'superbike'. She gets on, plonks her helmet on and guess what, she could hardly even manage clutch control. She stalled the bike twice just trying to set off and she wobbled the whole way down the road until out of sight. I cant imagine what may have happened to someone so inexperienced. There really should be stricter laws relating to bikes. A full license and proof of training should be required before anyone is allowed to purchase a bike....

Be safe out there bud.

PS: I want the new BMW GS 800. Its such a looker!
