Hey,

I finally got a DSLR last week - after much research and testing different cameras, I went for a Nikon D40!

So far I am really enjoying it, and I know that I still have a lot to learn! I am really happy with the image quality... coming from a P&S, the speed and continuous drive is great. I still love my old Canon Ixus V4 - it has served me well for the last 5 years and takes great outdoor pics! It'll still get used regularly when I want a pocket size camera :)

I also got the 55-200mm VR lens, to compliment the std 18-55mm kit lens. I haven't got much experience with lenses, but I think the image quality is very good for the price!

Anyway, just wanted to share and say thanks to the "Multimedia/Photography" forum members for the interesting discussions.

Here is a link to a pic of the camera with 55-200mm lens...

Congrats! Awesome camers :D

How much did the lense set you back, it looks uber awesome! Id love to get one.

Now, you'll want to get one of these too - the Nikon version of the cheap&wonderful 50mm lens that us Canon boys are raving about so much :)

I must say, I'm respecting my plastic fantastic. I just don't shoot that long very much. I like wide :)

The lens is from the the US (family brought it back to SA for me) - $220 (R1700). I think they are about R3k here?

The first thing I need to get now is a bag for the the D40 + kit lens and 55-200 lens. I am busy doing some research on the net - thinking of getting a Crumpler bag (they look pretty cool). I've looked at Lowepro, but haven't found something I like yet.

I have several bags which I use, depending on the situation and which lenses/flashes I'm carrying. The one I use most is the Lowepro Slingshot 200 when I'm carrying shorter lens kit. Very useful in that you carry it like a backpack, but can flip it around to the front to get to the kit without taking it off.

I mainly use a Lowepro EDIT and a Kata R101 knapsack.

Camera bags... seriously??
My dad has one... I just wrap mine in a wife-beater vest or a sarong or something.
Strangely enough I dont feel comfortable lugging around r40-50k worth of gear in a manky wife-beater vest . . . and I wouldnt be caught dead in a sarong either ;)

I love my Crumpler bag. And my Lowepro. Both of them :) Have a look at the Crumpler Prettyboy. It comes in different sizes. A colleague at work has one of the smaller ones for her K100D Super and an extra lens and flash. I have the XXL one, which happily gobbles up the 40D, three big lenses or two big ones plus the two primes and flash, with some space left of odds&ends.

Yep, that's the one I've been checking out :) Crumpler Pretty Boy (L)

Ok, ok... point taken!:p

Maybe the whole camelman/photog just rolled out of a Bali massage hut image is a bit much if your camera costs a bit. ;)

Those Crumplers aint bad lookin', quite like this guy:

@O.P.:reviewer reckons the D40, spare lens and all cables fit into this bag.

I'll still use my 'hezbollah' scarf when shooting on the street though - keep the camera all tucked up in there and pop it out when the moment is right, nice and inconspicuous for your candids ;)

Is it just me or does this look like a codpiece?
