So i finally took my first steps into the SLR world..

Bought myself a Canon 1100D with a EF-S 18-55mm Lens with 8GB 20MB/s SD Card and Lowepro bag for R4500...

Bought it to take family pics etc, nothing special..... Now i just need to figure out how to take good photos :)

First go out and take a load of pictures, just snap away. Soon enough you will know what you want from your camera, and then you will find it easier to apply anything you learn.
Right now going on about shutter speed, depth of field or lighting will mean pretty much nothing ...

So go out take loads of pictures and then look at them find what you like, then go out and take some more.

Also don't be afraid to use the P-mode (auto-mode). Check the exif info from the best shots and try and repeat it in one of the Manual mode (obviously the environmental conditions have to be the same, i.e. lighting, subject, etc).

Congrats and enjoy!

What are your main photo interests except for family pics?

Like DGremlin said, take loads of pics! Only way you will learn! Always remember to check what made the photo special or a fail and use that the next time!

Composition is also something you can read up about! That can make or break a photo!

+1 for the 'professional' mode :)

Get past chimp mode as soon as possible. Congrats on your purchase and enjoy the ride.

Enjoy. There are lots of great resources available online and at your local bookstore that will help you on your way - it's up to you to practice, practice, practice. :)

Agreed, always try to keep calm even if things aren't working out like you planned. :)

Composition is equally as important. :whistling:

Thanks guys,

My main interest for the camera is for the kids, they grow up so fast and the point and shoots just dont cut it anymore. I need to capture their expressions and emotions in an instant..

Other than that i like Black and White architectural photos, especially bridges, i love the brooklyn bridge for example, also i love silhouettes etc....

I have had a couple of Canon`s before so i am already used to the Green Auto Options and will try to move away from it :)

There are better websites out there. Take most of what he says with a pinch of salt though.

This site is camera manufacturer unbiased and has some of the best tutorials.

^What he said. Ken Rockwell can sometimes come across as an elitist and dismissive pr@%k.
Try this guy's website also David Peterson.
