So about 2.5 years ago, I got consent to order a FTTB connection for my school. After getting quotes and shopping around, we settled on the previously existing ISP for the connection, as they are hooked into the TENET network and at the time offered an unbeatable price on the package. DFA were tapped to the do the install. As I later learned, DFA does a boat load of subcontracting, but that is neither here nor there. Come November 2016, ClearLine IS came to do a site inspection, plans were drawn up and approved and all seemed ready to kick off construction wise mid Jan/Feb 2017. Nope.

DFA and the City of Cape Town decided to hate each other and our fibre order got caught up in the middle of that. 2017 and 2018 vanished into a hole as progress creeped forward slower than a snail glued to concrete. Things got so bad we had to make use of a WISP for 18 months, though their speed has dropped badly in the last 3-6 months. We actually got to the point where we cancelled the order in November 2018, but all of a sudden the heavens aligned and we got told they are ready to go. We decided to give them one last chance due to the already long time frame, so things happened. Quickly!

Trenching and build was finished by 15 December 2018. Fibre got floated less than 2 weeks ago, followed by termination, splicing and testing. I expected the ISP to supply a router, but instead we simply have a CPE and we have a 5 IP block set on a VLAN. After some issues getting traffic to flow yesterday, I was able to bring the link up with help from the ISP. Hello Speediest of 95/95 local.

TLDR: Long wait is over, life is about to get a lot better at my school internet wise.

5 ip block nice , can run small web service with info for parents
We have a cloud school admin system and portal for that. The IP space will be for our firewalls and for enabling things like VPN and Remote Desktop as well as CCTV access etc. Tomorrow I will rearrange some cables to actually bring the fibre live into the network.
