The guy who does my garden asked me to help out - his sons car needs new tyres badly, he was pulled over in a roadblock and fined for 'rolling racing slicks' ;)

I am tempted to help out but I don't wan to create a situation where there is bad blood due to unpaid debt or him feeling he needs to work off the cost of his kids tyres or something... basically: the situation is rather frought...

I wonder if there is some place that will finance tyres for those who cannot afford a new set out of hand, anyone know?

Or RCS card (valid at Tiger Wheels for instance - I think) . Problem is the person doing your garden may have a problem obtaining credit.

Why can't his son go get a job? I don't think ppl will finance tyres, unless you take a loan!

I think this is the reality of South African life.....people are using busted up/unroadworthy/uninsured cars to eek a living from. If its his garderner, we are bound to believe he is black and from the township....( <- check out my stereotyping here )...hence his son has some old/busted up mazda 323 blowing blue smoke into the atmosphere...but he uses the car to deliver some fresh vegetables/fruit for street vendors.....or, his gardner can be a 52 year old Afrikaner guy with a boep nailed by BEE, AA, Julius, etc... who started a business doing peoples gardens....he drives these small 'delivery' Chanas with gardening tools and a couple of helping hands....and his son delivers pizza in their 1992 Corolla GL....hence, his son needs this car to get the extra cash...there is no cash available to buy tires one-shot (in both cases)...

tel us more SlinkyMike....it seems that you gardner is a very loyal friend of yours....our gardner is indespensible....works for us for 20 years now and walks 15km every sunday morning from the township to our house in the 'Burbs...saves the taxi money we give him for the morning trip....

Awesome, cannot believe that I missed this when googling.

Yea, it's the gardeners son. He has a clapped out old Escort that he uses to go to varsity. He's actually learned to fix most of its niggles himself but tyres are consumable so fixing is not in context obviously.

He's a good kid and very bright and aside from the fine for slick tyres I'd hate to hear that he got hurt or hurt someone else in an accident due to the mix of wet roads and slick tyres, it just seems like a silly risk but obviously the word 'risk' implies that he has a choice - in this case he cannot afford - pure and simple.

If he does not qualify for financing then I will stand surety but both his dad and I don't want to turn it into a hand out situation.

SlinkyMike, (before signing surety) why not open up a bank account, then I can give R100 towards the "Buy the gardner's son's car tyres to get to varsity FUND"...

It will take 12 guys on here R100 to get him a new set asap.....pm me the banking details...

Great idea, The graduate, lets just do something special for someone and just donate for the tyres of this brilliant Gardener's boy. I know how it feels. My late mother was a domestic worker and I was helped by her former employers. To cut the long story short. I am who I am today because of them
