Find my iPhone busts thieves!

And... Since the Lion OS update, works on your Mac too. :D

I hope we get more and more of this, on iPhone, Android also Blackberry should give free access to their tracking application.

The more they get tracked and caught the better for all of us.

Too bad the bb one is quite useless. Testes it myself, firstly it requires bis to work, also it requries your sim to be in it. If for any reason the thief decides to remove you sim, (sarcasm) can't think of any reason they would want to, they would get this lovely promt sayin the service needs to be re-registeres because of the sim change.

In what logical world is that a good security system I have no idea.

For droids though, other than mylookout is there a tracking app that does not need u to send ur phone n sms to activate and that has a website. Mylookouts good but all I want from it is the tracking features, backup and wannabe virus scans of no use to me.

AVG's Findr service works well, it even sms's you when the SIM change.

Personally I still think Theft Aware is the best but needs root for proper use.

Checked it out, and all well and good but its yet another SMS system, then i would rather use seekdroid, its not dependant on SMS to use it.
Only thing its got going for it is the invisibility, which is great, but i don't want to have to get someone elses phone to send an sms so that i can receive a link back to a map, seekdroid and mylookout at least allow you to log in from a pc and track it in real time as it moves. Seekdroid has the option of using sms's, its basically Theft Aware +

Theft aware requires me to remember special instructions, seekdroid i log into the website with a password i will never forget and i have nice links to click on that performs the operations for me without me needing to remember codes and commands.

Well done.

Very similar story here: Linky

My friend Hilton Kotze's laptop bag was stolen in Whiteriver and he also used the app to recover his iPad. Police were also keen to help.

Article includes pictures of the house where they found it and how they tracked it down with the app.

Did you know that you can track down your stolen Iphone and iPad with the Geo-Location Technology provided by Apple? I have only recently discovered this amazing technology when a good friend and well known nature photographer, Hilton Kotze, managed to assist the police in arresting thieves in the Nelspruit area!

I have asked Hilton to share a personal account of the events and would like to share this with images that were used in making the arrest!

I would like to thank Apple for their “locate me” technology as it helped the South African police to arrest a crime syndicate operating in the Nelspruit area.

My laptop bag was stolen out of my car on the 17th of August in White River South Africa. In my bag was a 17 inch Macbook pro and my Ipad.

I contacted my IT specialist Janes , and asked him to check on the web if he could see my Ipad ( I have "locate me" activated). He said my Ipad was on the move so I immediately went to the police to inform them that my bag had been stolen but that I had location tracking on it and it was moving.

They jumped into a car with me in and we set chase the whole time getting updates from Janes as to where they were stopping and where they were turning.

Eventually we followed them to panhandle house in Nelspruit. Janes was able to email us the exact location and a street view of the entrance!

The police were able to make 7 arrests and I recovered the pad but the laptop had been offloaded somewhere along the road. This was a major breakthrough for the police in the investigation into the crime syndicate and where their drop-off and hide-away points were.

The police arrested 3 Nigerian citizens and also found 8 empty laptop bags as well as a very expensive camera at the premises.

Can't wait for the day devices come out with a "Explode" facility.

A co-worker left her iPad on the plane late yesterday and even after reporting shortly after disembarking, due to time wasted by Kulula, it eventually found it's way into someone else hands. Her husband started up the find app on his iPhone and because the device was in flight mode all he could do was set it to lock and prompt him once online. This morning it came alive in Delft and while opening a case with the police near the airport it started moving. The police seemed quite keen to help and assigned 3 plain clothes officers and an unmarked car and went iPad hunting. By then it had moved to Mitchell's Plain and then a 3rd location deeper in. Once it had settled they managed to pin point the house it was in and the cops stormed in. The occupants claimed to know nothing about the missing iPad. The officers then asked him what exactly they were looking for, so he fired up the app on his iPhone again and made the iPad play sounds. Lo and behold there was the missing iPad in a room under some magazines much to the surprise of the thieves! :D

Good to know how handy this app can be especially with a willing police force behind it :)

Good to read :D :D :D :D
