Friend just moved to a complex in Fourways and there is physical copper installed - but what's the process to find out the number and get ADSL?

Simple as phone Telkom with an address?

If there's no dial tone then the service was cancelled and no number is associated so you will have to apply again. They do use existing copper when reconecting it.

If there is a line with dialtone, you could always call a cellphone.
BUT THERE IS A CLEVER TRICK.
From any Telkom landline just dial 101999 and it will read back the number to you.
Used by technicians for testing (e.g. crossed line).

I'll try see if dial tone tomorrow - haven't checked.

But if not, then apply with the address and things could take months?
