Any recommendations for a good replacement?
I prefer multipane file managers like Dolphin, Directory Opus with tree views etc.

Yeah, there are some alternatives. Path Finder is probably the most feature-rich. This one is new and very interesting, particularly for graphics work: Raskin. I really like it but Finder suffices for me. http://www.raskinformac.com/
