So I want to phone someone. On my old phone type the first letter, and all name starting with that letter appears.
How do I search in andriod.

Go to "phone" and just start type the name or go to "people" and either scroll or search.

Sent from my HTC Desire using MyBroadband Android App

You can even use the Google search bar widget that usually comes standard with Android.

Just type in the name and the contact should be listed.

Then there must have been very little installed on the phone.

If you type in "S" for example, everything "S" on the phone will be listed in the search bar. You can change this in settings to only show apps, contacts or web searches.

Also when opening contacts, long press menu to pop up the keyboard and start typing the contact name, should pop up the list of names like you are used to.

It depends to a degree on the phone maker of your phone and the version of Android it's running for instance on my Sony Ericsson Neo running 2.3.3 on the side where I scroll there's also a list with the alphabet and if I click on one of the letters it will show me the contact list starting there. Don't know where the other droids all have that though.

Install vlingo and ask the phone politely to dial it for you ;)

It actually differs from OEM to OEM, in HTC I went to People to look for numbers, on Sony Ericson I just hit the contacts tab next to phone that will have a search filter on top with the normal alphabetical list that you scroll. On MIUI I just "dail" the name like American numbers system and it will give me a shortlist on the top, example "John Doe" would be 5646 303.

But all 3 works with Vlingo. Press mic, say "Phone John doe" and off it goes :)

So you go to contacts, then press menu bottom, left one, touch search and there I go.
