It's a lot harder than I thought it would be!

A bit of background - I work for a small company as a systems analyst. Love the work that I do, but have started feeling pretty stagnant in the sense that it's basically the same sort of work which is hampering my growth. So I've decided that I need a new environment and a fresh set of challenges, and started looking for alternatives since September last year.

Now the problem is this - I've registered on all the main sites, and received numerous calls from recruiters. They request a bunch of documentation which I provide, and then I never hear from them again! It's an incredible waste of my time, and it seems like these sites are basically littered with ads from recruiters - companies rarely advertise directly. I've tried applying directly with companies on their websites, but it's the same story - you never hear back from them.

The problem definitely isn't my CV, skills, track record or qualifications because I meet all the relevant criteria and have been told so by these same recruiters. Perhaps the work that I do is somewhat specialist in nature - I don't have much development experience but satisfy every other criteria of a systems/business analyst. It's the only thing that I can think of.

So basically what I'm asking is how do you guys go about finding a new job? How is it that some people seem to move so easily?

Now I know how you are able to clock so many hours in KZ!
Devs get jobs easier than Analysts me thinks.I fall into both categories, but they hired me as a Senior Dev - but my official title is I.T Analyst lol.

How keen are you on going back to studying to brush up on your coding skills?

I've found in the past that sending my CV to companies ends up in a black hole. If you see a job posting that interests you, call the reception and ask to speak directly with someone who can help you with the job query. Once you get a warm body past the reception blockades, you'll find they might provide a direct email and look at your details more closely.

he said he would pass it on. im not drawing lines in the sand yet since there are lots of benefits to being here. basically want it known before increase time. if nothing happens then I might take further steps. so will start studying again soon. whatever I can do. at the moment my flextime is valuable with a little one and the supervisor is kewl. I must just perform like a prized pony. lol.

let me weigh in here.
I will never ever use a recruitment agency again. Never ever, never ever, never ever.
LinkedIn has done wonders for my career prospects, as well as people networking with me. That was one of the best moves I ever made in my life. What also helped was I am experienced in a lot of different things and never stopped learning. These days people are more hard up for getting the work done, in that regard, it pays to provide tangible proof of what you have done previously. In interviews I usually arrive with a box full of products I have designed, and let them play, touch, feel. Most of the time, the issues with hiring come in with money, because SA companies have the cheapskate mentality
Well there's few other options. All the job sites are filled with ads from recruiters. Just wanted to know if there's an easier way to bypass them because they just seem to get in the way and waste your time.

I would go the word of mouth route, except everyone I know works in different fields. And I can't exactly use my network that I've acquired through clients as that's ethically wrong and it's forbidden in my contract.

Been on LinkedIn forever and haven't had much success through it either. And even here, these recruiters are everywhere.

Well you have the time, so only drawback is $$$, but im guessing you cashed out your retirement fund so should be good for a few months?

Didn't resign yet. Wouldn't do that until I have something else lined up...

LOL my bad - i think half the posters on here also thought you left work in Sep and have been looking ever since.

So its been 8 months you have been looking now.How much longer are you prepared to look before you contemplate studying?

Have you tried Job Mail? My friend registered there a few weeks ago and got 2 job offers in a space of 2 weeks (give or take) from just registering, he hadn't (and still hasn't, probably because of laziness) applied for any jobs as yet. I also did a search for " System Analyst " jobs on Job Mail and got some nice results with verified vacancies here: System Analyst Job Search on Job Mail.

Agencies often falsify job ads to get CVs for their databases so I suspect that a large number of positions being advetised don't actually exist. Times are hard and they are getting more desperate and less ethical.

I don't think so, but you can always check for the company's contact details on the vacancy ad. Call them yourself to make sure, although I've never seen this.

PM me your CV.

Your post is a bit funny considering the sig you have on... I dunno

It's your CV. I used to have a long drawn out CV from what looked to be like a template from the 70's. It struck me when an agency said "they needed to rewrite my whole CV into their format" and one recruiter told me bluntly that "my cv is not concise enough".

After a radical redesign, 9/10 jobs I apply for will get me a phone call and at least a interview. Recruiters love my format as it saves time and they don't edit and change stuff in there. Over the past few year's I have experimented with colour and a few tweaks and it never fails. When you get your first phone call the rest is on your attitude and confidence as that will land you first and second interviews.

Remember, your CV is your first impression to the prospective employer and if you make it pop out from the rest, you will get an interview.

And don't paste a skills matrix or any other sort of table in there, Rather save one that an agency has sent you and keep it updated, that way you don't waste time filling in their skills matrix.
