Where are the cheapest places to rent in Joburg, preferablly close to the Melville/Randburg area? That is where i work.

I've never rented an apartment before and am looking for my own place now, not sure of great places to look. Are there places going for R2000 or is that just me being naive and hopeful?

I think that's hopeful

I'd say starting at 3500.00pm

If you're looking for somewhere cheap granny flats are the keyword. If you are charming and can genuinely cover the rent every month you are golden. Shop around and you'll score furnished, with dstv and internet.

Thanks guys. Yep, i'm screwed then :p R3500 is half my salary

That is not very nice to laugh. That was uncalled for.

Did not mean it that way. Apologies in any case. My wife and I are renting a nice 2bed flat atm for R3 600 in a very nice area in Durbanville which I think is a steal. We want to move to a townhouse but that will mean R6,5k at least. So I did not mean it degrading in any way, but rather "good luck finding anything decent for R2k". A bachelor flat these days go for R3,2k which is a joke. If you want to pay under R2k then you have to share.

It's okay, i didn't think it was offensive, i understood the context for the lol :p thanks for the advice this far, i will look around. I've been staying with family and rent hasn't been really realistic :p

It seems you don't want to share...

Then keep an eye out for granny flats/garden cottages. They'll probably be cheaper than a 1bed place

If you're interested in sharing a house with others, you could get something in that price range. Otherwise the garden cottages are going to be between R3,500 and R4,500 depending on size and location. If the house share idea is something you would be interested in, let me know. I know of a place in the Emmarentia/Greenside area.
