Finding your old car?

As per the commercial recently on TV where they find the vehicle the dad sold to get the sun a proper education, is this possible to achieve?

I'm looking for my old Ford Escort 1600 sport of 1978/79

How would one go about finding it, I have the old registration number still if that will help?

Yeah but I suspect you will need a inside contact at the licensing dept. 'Your' car might even be scrapped.

If it was something a little more exotic, i.e. sold in smaller numbers, you might get lucky - I personally found my grand father's Jaguar XK 140 and my Dad's 1968 S Type Jag, so it's not impossible....BTW the old man's sun [sic] is hanging out there in the sky - his son, might be a little happier, however.
