Fingerprint ATMs will not kill the PIN

Despite the imminent rollout of biometric ATMs, the traditional PIN will not go away, says an industry insider.

So now criminals will cut my finger off and make a record of it for everything.

Biometrics really isn't the way to go. Once it's compromised, you can't change your fingerprints like your password.

Which is exactly why the PIN won't go away.

The fingerprint is more like a username than a password.

In this case more like 2-stage authentication.

The deeper question is...who still uses ATM's?

Eish.. Did you read the article?

Anyway your 20 year old argument is moot.

The deeper question is...who still uses ATM's?

People who want to pay at the machines at most parking garages? People who don't want to swipe and take long and type pins (miss the old magstrip only CCs in this regard) for a R8.50 buddy coke?

Some banks still charge for swipes. Bank costs are a real thing. So someone you might pay in cash for a more casual job can avoid some costs by getting paid in cash.

The deeper question is...why can't you think of these things? :p

Those with Kids who don't want to give their kids credit/debit cards. Those who have a limited number of swipes before paying larger fees than withdrawing at the atm. Those who have to pay casual workers (e.g. gardener/maid). Those who buy food at small shops in town (don't want to use credit card). List could keep getting added to.

As to the article, the fingerprint might kill the card, not the PIN.

Yip but even then I'd argue nfc + tokenisation should do that. Why we hand over cards at restaurants is beyond me. I wonder if Apple Pay will ever come to SA as banks here like in Aus won't be so keen on the transaction cost loss
