Fingerprint readers on Laptops

I once had a work laptop with one of those. It did work but usually only after a few swipes - which made it more of an irritation than anything else. I tried setting it up with other body parts but the results weren't impressive. I disabled it after a colleague threatened to cut my finger off so they could get to my emails.

Dare I ask? :erm::wtf:

I doubt that the 5 volts supplying a plastic covered device is able to shock. Maybe you have a splinter embedded in your finger.
No it clealry shocks. Not sure if there is something wrong with my plug. All exposed metal parts shock so the whole motherboard is live.

I pointed out years ago to some guy doing a presentation on biometrics and stuff, bragging about the 1 in a million fail proof the finger readers are. I completely disagree with the security of adding an aditional option in a business to gain access. Even if It's almost failsafe it just opens another way of gaining access imo. Unless of coarse biometrics are set up so that you can't use a password but that cuases an integrity issue.

Still today a simple password is still the most secure given a proper policy and communicating with the staff how to set up secure passwords even in environments that requires a pw change every x months or so.

Use my Lenovo's all the time. Bonus is that you can actually use it to power on the laptop - one swipe powers on and logs in.

I use mine maybe a hundred time everyday .. its setup as a general password manager so I just swipe to login to windows, database, front-end, tools etc in order to develop. Funny I had one on my previous laptop but never used it, now I can't live without it. Can't tell you how much time it saves remembering passwords & having to re-login due to finger trouble of the typing kind.

Only thing tho is every once in a long while when my lappie goes to sleep the fingerprint software doesn't wake up with it & I have to revert to typing in my windows password until the next reboot. A knows problem that Dell's apparently not going to fix.

IMO fingerprint readers are thee shiz niz!

Thats really cool, but i suppose you still need to renew passwords on systems all the time - and also remeber them. Can't see you getting away with not changing your password as per company policies.
