Hi

Is anyone using a fingerprint reader to sign into their pc?
I'm just trying to find out how compatible they are & how safe they are.

I was searching the microsoft forums & saw a few problems with people not being able to configure their finger print reader with their pc but most of the post are 2024 & older.
Microsoft seems to blame the Chinese devices & say they aren't plug & play compatible with microsoft & need their own drivers which they don't seem to supply or are difficult to get hold of.

I'm actually looking for an alternate method of signing into my devices & different websites.
I don't like facial recognition because if someone picks up your phone & points it towards your face, they have just gained access to your phone.
It doesn't matter if they are 2 meters or 10 meters away from you.
Password managers were a convenient way to store passwords but these days more & more of these password managers are being hacked.
Both Microsoft & google are favorite feasting grounds for hackers.

Mostly use my smart watch but when that's not available I use touch ID.

Bought a dongle off Amazon, plugged into my Corsair Keyboard, now I sign into some apps and Windows with a finger

It does matter, it uses RGB+IR and can tell distance from the camera. Not sure how far away until it doesn't work, but definitely not at the level of 10m, usually the max is 8 feet / around 2m. Think this probably does have to do with when you set it up, how large face was in frame, etc.

I've also been thinking of getting a fingerprint one, make it easier to sign in to password manager more often / maybe make it each time since I don't log into stuff that often.

You can try using an old android phone: https://github.com/MeisApps/pcbu-desktop / https://www.xda-developers.com/unlock-windows-pc-fingerprint-scanner-android/
Was thinking about doing this, but think if I do, will probably be get actual dedicated device for it.

Google supports pass keys these days... apple too I think... I don't know about MS
MS fully supports as of a year ago on consumer accounts, think business side was a bit earlier as I remember using them for some internal systems in 2023, though could we got "early" access/test as were a very large client of MS and good chance asked them for it.

I've use github on my linux pc I never know you could use it on an android device.
I need to do a deeper research in a few things here.
Thanks

Aaah it's good to be in  land.
Except when your kids can get into the most secure device in the planet :’(

But to OP, I use fingerprint sensor on my PC and obviously my kids have never managed to get past that.

Oh, definitely an issue with the Bitwarden software but hard to believe it's nothing to do with Apple. I don't want to switch to apple keychain though - that would make life difficult for my Linux and Windows boxes.

It has to be Bitwarden, or your browser because Google Chrome passkeys work natively with TouchID no problem.

You can use iCloud Keychain on windows now and most browsers now so might not be as bad as you think.

Should work via the desktop app if you set it to start up automatically.
