FIP's, ISP's and the costs that go with getting FTTH

I need advice and maybe a bit of insight from people who know more of this than me.

A FIP (Fibre Infrastructure Provider) is finally laying down fibre lines in our area which is FANTASTIC!!!, have been waiting for this for years. Now the research starts...who provides the best price, coupled with the best equipment and provides the best service delivery.

This lead to a bit of a dead end, as the best deal I could find, does not support the local FIP...at least not that I know of. FYI best deals were on WebAfrica.

This made me think...why not start my own small area ISP. Don't really want to make massive amounts of money on the internet services...just provide stable fibre at good speed as cheap as possible without bundle deals and contracts and what not.

I did some research, but thought that the masses might know more and could provide more info.

where to start, what to do....most of the bigger ISP's are not great on service delivery and this is where I see an opportunity.

This isn't a bad idea - but you're getting into an extremely competitive and expensive landscape.

None of those so called free things are free; the ISPs that give you a "free installation," that's R1725 they're going to get back from you, the "Free activation," that's a R1009 cost that they want to get back from you. Free router, same. Free anything else. Same. The more freebies you get from an ISP, the less likely they are going to spend on what matters like good kit, sufficient upstream and peering and moreover great people (because they cost lots of real money). Some ISPs then introduce paid-for premium tiers (hoping you'll cough up more for a better service).

But if you have some cash to burn, it's not a bad idea to explore further. What do you need to know?

Thats the thing...competitive or not...everyone (the well know and not so well known ISPs) has bad reviews. People are looking for service, and they are prepared to pay a little extra for it. I would rather have a guy come to my house assess it in terms of what kit is needed for coverage and what my needs are in terms of use and go that route...a proper consult. With an explination that does not include jargon...so they understand what they are getting in to.

Everyone is going for volume, quick and fast catch as many as possible because everyone wants FTTH

I need to know, how to start. How do I get bulk bandwith, what licenses do I need to be an ISP if any and if I need any kit at all to start off with.

Do I need a FUP, how do I manage the bandwith?

Is there someone that offers a platform to manage client accounts and billing. But keeping it simple as possible

how does the backend actually work:

Step1: client signs up
Setp2: ?
Etc.

Another thing, the local IPCs are crazy, at least 3 times the international rate...I mean how are we supposed to het everyone online...it is the bureaucracy side of thing that is driving me mad..
