Fire at Pick 'n Pay, Gardens Centre (PE)

Fire broke out this morning. Appears that an elderly office employee was trapped inside and has passed away.

Will post updates as received.

Port Elizabeth fire-fighters have reportedly located the body of a Pick n Pay employee who was trapped inside a section of a store in Circular Drive which was gutted by a fire earlier on Friday.

The woman's identity has not yet been released.

Several fire-tenders were dispatched to the scene of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unconfirmed.

Fire started in the adjoining building behind the store itself (possibly PnP's cold rooms) and then spread to the store. Extent of damage to store not known yet.

Main damage is to the storage areas at the back of the complex (attached to the PnP store itself).

The store itself has water and smoke damage.

I don't know how true it is but I heard rumours that it might have been a gas bottle that somehow started the fire?

Unconfirmed report that the deceased old lady helped a pregnant woman to escape through a window before being overcome.

If true... damn! Gooseflesh... heroic does not begin to describe her actions.

With fires like this forensics are contracted to find the cause. If it was arson, they usually find it. The difficulty is determining who did it.

With arson comes the difficulty of finding the culprit/s. Disgruntled or recently dismissed employee. Maliciously caused for fun. Customers who got a bad deal or service.

The needless loss of life will make this a priority case.
