Fire 'bad' ministers now - DA
Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance called on the ANC on Wednesday to fire five Cabinet ministers, including Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, ahead of this year's national elections.

The chief opposition party said Dlamini-Zuma must go because she carried responsibility for "the backing South Africa has given to dictators and oppressors across the world".

The DA was reacting to a statement by ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe on Tuesday that if the ruling party won the upcoming elections its new policy institute, and not the president, would monitor the performance of ministers and that incompetent ones would be sacked.

DA chief whip Ian Davidson said there was no need to wait until after the elections.

"President Kgalema Motlanthe does not need to wait until after the election before he removes ministers who are not doing their jobs," he said in a statement.

"If he does not do this now, then the ANC cannot expect anyone to take its promise of good government seriously."

Deserve the boot

The party said the minister in the presidency, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, Land and Agriculture Minister Lulu Xingwana, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa and Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula also deserved the boot.

Mpahlwa had "all but ignored" his ministry's role in driving job creation and growth", while Mapisa-Nqakula had left South Africans despairing "over ever getting the documents they need".

The DA said Tshabalala-Msimang deserved to be fired for "her catastrophic reign in the health department", which ended when Motlanthe replaced her with Barbara Hogan in September.

It claimed that Xingwana's management of the Land Bank had damaged South Africa's land reform programme irredeemably.

"South Africans deserve to be governed by ministers who act with integrity, devote themselves fully to their jobs and act in the interests of all South Africans.

"But it is clear that many of the current members of Cabinet do not do this and the DA challenges the ANC to immediately remove them," Davidson said.

if only, but would be proper.

If all else fails, maybe these offenders can just be forced to drop their double-barrel surnames? :)

Agree. Either keep your own name or take your partners. This "both" stuff is pretentious nonsense. I mean, how long do you want your name to be?

The DA never seizes to amaze me. What I would be doing at the moment is working on a very aggressive plan to ensure that neither COPE nor ANC take some of DA's votes in the general election. Instead the DA chooses to make unnecessary media remarks and 2cents' worth of surveys!!!

I'm getting disappointed by this organisation

As the official opposition, it is their job to highlight the shortcomings of the government. It's called holding the government accountable; something the ANC refuses to do

and one of them is; why not if the anc say it will do something but after the elections only- why then can't they do it now ?

Electioneering & politicking

Just like creating COPE is basically an election stunt by the ANC to ensure their majority and eat away at the other parties' support, that was just another stunt by Gwede.

It's basic politics, that's all. It' important that we understand that. All i'm saying is that after years and years, the DA is still a crying child who just does not want to grow up. Leon also adopted the same approach (trying to discredit the ANC, contradict every single policy the ANC has) and guess what, after years of doing so I can guarantee you that the DA will not get more that 15% of the vote.

As for it being the official opposition means that it has to hold government accountable, that is weak. every single party in that parliament has the responsibility of holding government accountable.

I however must praise Helen Zille for being more of a visionary than Leon was, but as for governing in 2014, i think that's abit too ambitious!

OT - What is the point of the Union Buildings, if crucial decisions like the performance of Ministers will be taken at Luthuli House?

I agree with you, but whether or not its politics, this or that- you have to admit that if a party say that they will do something but only after they are elected in force, why can't they do it right now ?. We all know how the housing for example has been used to play the populace from the 94's onwards....
