Hi

Can anyone help me. I want to purchase a firearm and apply for a licence, what is the process and how long does it take? I am based in PE. I heard that it takes quite long. Is there any way to speed the process up? all help is appreciated

First get a good reason why you need one. then go the a gun shop, they will be able to set you in the right direction.

Consider a airgun pistol, or a pepper paint ball gun.

i was held up at gunpoint while my mum and sister was with me. think that is reason enough to want one. I do know how to handle a firearm. was trained from a very young age so its just the matter of getting the competency cert and licence

The license takes about 3 months, competency I cant remember.

1. Find a gun shop that offers proficiency trainig

2. Get the books from the shop, study, write the tests in the books and study some more

3. Write exams at the shop.

4. After you passed you take the certificates to the closest SAPS and apply for competency. They will also ask for references that they can contact.

5. SAPS will send your apllication in which can take 1-3 months

6. In this time find a FA that works for YOU and that feels good in your hands. If you decide on one you can pay for it.

7. After receiving your competency you can apply for your license with the details of the firearm you bought.

8. Install a SABS approved safe against an i side wall of your house/safe room.

10. SAPS officer will come an inspect your safe to make sure it is installed correctly.

11. It will take approx. 3 months to receive your license.

* You HAVE to HAVE a good reason/motivation for why you need it. Please dont say you need it for work because they will deny it. In your motivation you should include pictures of your security measures you have taken at your house, it helps.

Mention that the FA is for LAST RESORT only. Attach crime stats of the area and case numbers of crimes against you.

Mention which FA you decided on and why you decided on the specific model.

Ask if you need anymore info.

PS. Are you going to have the FA on you 24/7?

Step 12: Oscar Pistorius your g/f.

Seriously, do not get a gun until you have a HUGE amount of experience on a range, and you know how to handle one. You can hire one at a range.

A gun in your house is a very, very big responsibility. And don't forget the statistics:

both South African and international statistics show that gun owners are four times more likely to have a firearm used against them than they are to use one successfully in self-defence.

Make sure you only pull out the gun if you are ready and willing to pull the trigger.

Let me guess those stats are from GFSA?
