Johannesburg - Protesters set off firecrackers in a student centre at Wits University on Thursday.

"We have just had reports of about 50 to 60 protesters entering the Matrix Student Centre and using firecrackers to alarm and disperse students," the university said in a statement.

A cleaner fainted and was being treated by a doctor in the Campus Health and Wellness Centre.

Protesting students were breaking concrete dustbins to use as rocks. Police were on the scene and had contained the protest to the Library Lawns.

Stink bombs were reportedly used to disrupt lectures on the Braamfontein campus in the morning. Students and lecturers moved to the next available venue.

Student leaders and management were expected to meet later on Thursday to discuss access to "decolonised" higher education.

Students were expected to select a delegation of 20 to meet the senior executive, including the vice chancellor, principal and dean of students. The meeting would be live streamed

Students wanted the meeting to be held on the Ground Floor of Senate House (Solomon Mahlangu House). Management agreed to the request, but only from 17:00 onwards so that lectures and work in the building would not be compromised. Otherwise, an alternative venue would be found.
