Hi Guys,

I've recently made a switch to Ubuntu 8.04, LOVING IT!
So much to learn and the interface really gets the thumbs up from me.
I need to know how to install Firefox 3.03, I got the tar.bz2 file and kinda halfed arse the setup. I don't know what I done but the beta version won't start-up now. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Open Source FTW! :D

Doesn't each Fire Fox come with a "safe mode" option even though it is linux and i don't know linux at all...

Try the safe mode thingy.
And did you upgrade from the previous version or did you fresh install?

Try the following:
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install firefox

Instead of downloading the install file, why not just let the package manager / update manager do it for you? Firefox is installed by default in Ubuntu 8.04, at level 3.0b5 or something; but it updates for you. Mine is at 3.03 2008092510 just via update manager.

You should have a red arrow or other icon in your top panel that launches update manager (if you mouse over it will say "There are 26 updates available." or something like that). If not, go to System > Administration > Update Manager. Check everything if you're on local or have lots of cap, otherwise uncheck everything and check the firefox items. And then 'Install Updates'.

If you have to uninstall firefox to clear up the current mess, you should be able to do the same thing, but go to the Package Manager instead and install firefox as a new app.

Sometimes you'll want to install a product or version that's not in the repositories. ... And that would be a subject for a different post.

Synaptic package manager is one of the core utlities linux consist of to simplify aplication/updates/package installation's. could attempt the apt-get route as well if u want to get your hands down and dirty (and as a noob I'll highly advise you to spend some time familiarising yourself with the terminal..then the true power of linux will start shinning through) but on a day to day basis for people who like clicking allot or prefer a GUI interface I'll advise good old synaptic. otherwise just Msn me @ [email protected] and I'll look see if I can't help u..

I'm getting confused with my firefox I tried sudo apt thing but its not working.
How do I remove the beta and install the 3.03 version from the tar.bz file.
I have to run my windows partition to browse and ask questions so please can someone post me an answer.
Also whats a quick way to get your PPoE connection to start working, I struggle a bit with this.

What exactly did you do?
I take it something like:
./configure
make
make install?

Then simply cd to the dir with the source and:
make uninstall

The reason you should use your distro package manager is because it tracks what has been installed via a world file ( DUH ), and thus will be able to find updates and whatnot for installed packages.

Normally what will happen with the tar.bz2 file is that you will run:

tar xvjf firefox.tar.bz2
cd firefox
./firefox

So it will unpack itself as a folder in the directory you are currently in. Then you need to change into that directory (use ls to see what the directory name is). And once in that directory type ./firefox to run. The dot is very important.

If it was a +/- 9Mb download, then follow what milomak said. If that is the case, then firefox was never installed, it executed form the directory you extracted it in.

If it was a 36Mb download, then do what I said.

In what way is it not working? What error messages/other messages do you get? Details details!

I kept getting the child process error but it's ok now.
Some A**hole screwed up my partition so I had to redo it
I'll just do the upgrade.
Thanks for the help guys
