I want to format my pc but i have some passwords and stuff saved on firefox how can i save them then just reinstall them after i format?

Use FEBE extension for Firefox. Combine it with Google Browser Sync and basically everything is saved for when you re-install. Just remember to save your FEBE profile!

can't you just simply back up your firefox profiles folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ProfileName) and then copy it back to the same location after you've installed firefox again?

Yes you can do that, I've done it lots of times, even between Ubuntu and Windows. :)

I save my profile to /Mozilla/Profiles/FF and I am able to share the same profile between my Linux distros and XP (and Vista). That way I can also just zip the folder and keep it on a USB stick.

I do the same for thunderbird.

Yep this is what i did and everything worked perfectly for me.
For saved passwords i used an extension called Password Exporter to export them and then import them again after the install.

=)
