I am a huge supporter of Open Source, and so, Firefox.
But after an hour or so it gets sooo slow, and it uses 600mb to 700mb of ram?

This is on my whole network... I have various plugins on different machines, the common one being ForcastFox. I have disabled this to see if there is a differencee, but no. I have disabled the Skype plugin ages ago, because that causes this version of Firefox to crash (or this version of skype, or both).

Is it just me or is Firefox turning into a real klunker..

I don't remember Firefox ever being open source, and it seems like a memory leak is causing the problem. Which version of Firefox are you running? Maybe try something like Chrome, it's built on open source.

FF is known for it's memory leaks. Oddly enough after reformatting last week, I noticed that it seemed to consume less memory and has been behaving pretty well. Using 3.5.1, with Adblock Plus being the only add-on.

I am using 3.0.12.. but it says that its fully up to date.
Do you think that getting 3.5.2 will make a difference.. (I'm downloading it anyway..)

3.5 was a big step forward, I'd definitely recommend it.

+1
I've also found 3.5 an improvement over 3.0. Loads pages a little faster, with slightly lower reported memory usage (not that it matters with 4GB RAM :D)

Firefox's performance varies a lot depending on the machine, I've found. On my uber main desktop, with stacks of add-ons, it runs like a dream. On a p4 with a gig of ram it's slooow. On my atom - powered netbook - VERY slow, to the point where I give up and use Chrome. My conclusion is it's one resource-hungry bugger of a piece of software. All the same, it's still my preferred browser-of-choice.

Maybe try doing a fresh install, as some people said FF is known for mem leaks! I'm running 3.5.1 and its pretty smooth and quick. I also have tons of addons..lol..and generally mines uses about 100-300Mb most of the time, there are times when it can go past the 400 mark but I've never seen it reach the numbers you're getting.

But yeah also try chrome as some people suggested, I use it on my laptop and its slim and quick!

Done! I hope its all better now.

I have chrome, and I use it every now and then and its ok...
Its not Firefox tho...

Didn't know it was open source as I for one haven't seen mods of it, lame assumption but that how I view most open source software lol.

Think Google has yet won another battle in another internet browser thread :D.

Well, ever since I've upgraded from 3.1 to 3.5 / 3.5.1 I've had endless lag and freez ups with Firefox. Re-installed it, didnt help. Cleared cache didnt help. deleted temp files... didnt help. Checked for Spyware... sure, found some, but didnt make it better.

I do however think its not entirely firefox's fault... will wait and see after I format my pc!.
But for now, I'm content on Chrome!

What I have found is that firefox keeps processing flash and animations on web pages if the tabs are not visible. Sometime I find it chewing a CPU core all on its own and taking 500mb ram. Finding the offending page(s) and killing it usually solves the problem.

An artifact let over from the Netscape days, no doubt. (unless I'm mistaken).

I found that Netscape Navigator for OS/2 did exactly the same thing. Closing the offending page does wonders (especially with animated GIF's and other stuff that keeps on running in the background).

I am currently using 3.5.2pre, and it works like a dream. Had no issues with the other 3.5.x either. And I often run it with multiple tabs for a period of time.

That's with my usual addons like AdBlock, NoScript, TACO, MM3, DownThem All, and TerminalRun.

Firefox is/was the mod to another browser called Mozilla browser. Sea Monkey is another mod.

It's the reason why there is a million and one addons for FF: everyone knows the innards of the browser so you can do whatever you want to "mod" it essentially.

I'm disappointed with the new Firefox version. It eats a lot of memory and CPU, websites/tabs doesn't open or gets stuck on one page and no other buttons (or popups for buttons) work anymore. I have to forcefully close it.

Too afraid to open multiple tabs now...
