firefox has automatically downloaded an update, but when I click install, it says something like, "Cannot update all files, permission needed to modify files. Please restart Firefox and try again."

Then when I retart FF and it starts normally, but no attempt is made to update. A couple of hours later, it redownloads the update, and repeats the process.

I have shut down every single app including Spybot and still it wont work............the prob is it keeps downloading the update over and over again each time it tries.

What do I do?

maybe you should try uninstalling firefox completely, restarting ur pc and then re-installing 2.0.0.7 which is the latest version as far as i know. then try to do the updates. are you the administrator for ur pc? maybe if ur not the admin, that's maybe the problem? i don't know but it's worth a try.

Its on 2.0.0.8 now, that is the update that tried to pull on my side this morning.
Go to the firefox webiste and download the full installer its pretty small.
Then upgrade it from that.

wow that was a quick release. i just dl 2.0.0.7 about 2 weeks ago. i will try it at home later and get back to you.

I have just updated it :)

Let's hope it doesn't crash as often now as what it did with the 2.0.0.7 release :p

The first download (update only) on the Mac failed to install, so FF 2.0.0.7 downloaded the full 2.0.0.8 release automatically ... during install it prompted me for my Kerberos domain password, which it has never done before ... this might relate to your permission problem ... somehow

was that update perhaps released this morning cos i think i run an update check last night and got nothing. it might have been last night or the night before.

It was the 18th (don't know what time), ie. what time it would be here in SA

depends on their specific location. can be anything from 7 to 9 hours time difference if it's based in the states.

Yeah mine popped up at about 8am to tell me about the update. Anyone checked to see whats new in it? prolly just the normal bug/security fixes.

taken from the mozilla website for the 2.0.0.8 update...

"Software Update will not work if Firefox is installed to a location on your disk to which you do not have write access, since Software Update needs to replace or create files in this location."
