Fireplace advice

Freestanding vs insert. Which one would you choose?
Freestanding can be cheaper compared to insert, but is freestanding as efficient when enclosed in fireplace opening?

A freestanding when used in a closed fireplace open where the flue runs up the chimney means you lose potential heat. We have a traditional open fireplace and a closed fireplace where the flue runs up to the ceiling before exiting the house so we get the 'additional' heat from the flue in the house.

Check this out on takealot: Heat Powered Stove Fan 4 Blade Silent Eco Fan for wood, anthracite stoves

We have a similar thermoelectric fan, no where near as effective as an electric one but it costs nothing to run.

i paid R1200 for blue gum for 1000pces including delivery and stacking

wood was little wet cause i bought it after our 1st rains

now the wood out there will probably be very wet cos has rained a few days so far
From?

I got "big bags" of wattle from Protea Groves for R50 per bag. They'll deliver some time over the weekend when I'll be able to tell if it was a good idea or not.
Im still very well stocked I think for this entire season but its a pain to find new supplier so keep us posted.

They've just delivered, so that was pretty quick. Bags weigh between 10kg and 15kg each. I don't have a moisture meter but it "looks" dry.

I guess the proof will be in the pudding, or burning in this case.

Also use one of the thermoelectrics - was wondering if it's worth getting a second one to get bigger shift of air

What brands would you recommend for closed combustion fireplaces? I'm looking for two small (4-6 kW) units, but a good seal to keep as much as possible smoke out of the house is high on my priority list. I've been looking at the Megamaster Bailey, but I don't know enough about fireplaces to say if they're worth their price, or just riding on Megamaster being a well-known brand.

Morso or GTFO!

Just kidding, I have loved both the Morso 4542 from our previous house and the Morso 1630 we currently have but we didn't pay for either and not sure if we would given their pricing. I am not sure where you are but a good friend manages the inland branch of Beauty Fires based in Fourways and they have a few options for almost any budget...

Also interested in the answers so will be following.

I'm currently also looking to install a fireplace and have been looking at the Kratki k7 and Plamen Tara. Both claim to have good local support, only hope the sales people are right... does anyone know anything about these brands?

I'm not even sure our brand but having used a few of these in friend's places, AirBNBs and rentals and all that I gotta say - smoke coming into the house seems to be a non-issue really. Even when opening the door to add more wood, can't say I've ever noticed smoke being a problem. Small sample size to be fair.
Some are better than others at heating a place up, and some also seem to be better at like how long a piece of wood will last but I'm afraid I don't know enough of the different brands to give an input here. I've never experienced a bad one to be honest. Morso will obviously be the gold standard, with gold standard prices.

Modern design, large glass, one control that can put it out, box big enough to take standard wood horizontal or perpendicular. I have a northern flame and very happy.
