Fireplace advice

Not so sure about the firewood farm wood. Bought hardwood and softwood (but unsure what they are).

A week later, I have never seen so much ash in my fireplace in all the years I have been using it.

Unsure if it is because these pieces are chunky whereas all the other wood I ever used (whether side of the road bag etc) were thinner .

Anyway, I hate the amount of ash that I need to clean now. Previously, I needed to empty the ash tray every 3-4 days, and now it's daily.

Next time, will also only be buying hardwood
I'm using black wattle again and loving it!

Interesting to see how different hard woods burn. This is the warmest the fireplace gas been but it is solidly chocked down.

Yeah, I am gonna do the same next time .

Have to say, am eating through the wood this year, chunky or not.

I couldn't find black wattle so ordered another load of blue gum. For those who have tried both types which is preferred for a modern closed combustion stove?

I find gum better than wattle. It's a bit denser probably 'cos it's a bit more slower growing. My 2 cents.

Interesting I have used both and way prefer black wattle.

Tbh I typically buy two bags of the wood then buy a ton of the one I'm happier with

Might also be a "bad" batch

Gum by far.
Wattle burns too quickly and I go through way more wood.

Still unpacking the wood we ordered before winter started, a few bags left…

And I like the cheap firelighters that Builders sell…

if that's that builders stuff then its horrible...along with there charcoal/briquettes...burns too quickly...

Typically buy these on special for the season and then break off small pieces to get the kindling going

has anyone ever used one of these for an open fire place?

I'm thinking I can just put it in front of the fire and it will spread the heat ?

Everything I've read about them seems positive - they seem to really do the job. I don't really need one, but I guess best case scenario for them is when you have a closed combustion fire jammed into an existing chimney hearth. Kinda like this:

Umm, I think they really need to be on top of a pretty hot lump of cast iron or steel to work properly. Where will you get that on an open fire place?

"Heat Powered Stove Fans actually work based on the simple principle that if two dissimilar metals are placed together and heated, they will create a small voltage that can be enough to power a motor."
