Fireplace advice

has anyone ever used one of these for an open fire place?

I'm thinking I can just put it in front of the fire and it will spread the heat ?

I have been thinking about one of these, or the one that goes on the flue, not sure I am keen to spend the money to try though as our closed fire place is basically set in a ****ing theatre. Our living area is open plan comprising two lounges, dining room and kitchen with only the kitchen having a ceiling.

Umm, I think they really need to be on top of a pretty hot lump of cast iron or steel to work properly. Where will you get that on an open fire place?

"Heat Powered Stove Fans actually work based on the simple principle that if two dissimilar metals are placed together and heated, they will create a small voltage that can be enough to power a motor."
Ya, thinking about it now... if I place it in front of an open flame it might utn into a flame thrower...

When you say ‘move the air’, are we talking a noticeable amount in a wide area or like an asthmatic blowing through a straw?
I have one too. Was skeptical about them at first and still am but they do appear to be of some benefit. Once we left it not on the fireplace and the room seemed colder until we put it back where it belongs.
Asthmatic with a straw is more like it as they don't really make any kind of noticeable drought.

You don't need a massive wind, just something that moves the air, even slowly, to allow colder air to also heat up. It will definitely seem like the whole room is heating up faster and feel warmer overall.

When our fireplace had an issue and the built-in fans didn't work, the fireplace was "nice" to have. However when the fans were eventually fixed...massive difference. Now, a 60sqm lounge/kitchen (its big) feel so much better. You instantly feel the difference when walking to another part of the house.

its expensive lol get a litie to stand and wave and move the air

also i doubt this works on a free standing fireplace
have a built in braai thing but I'm using a fireplace grate inside it...im thinking that fan raise on a brick just infront of the grate.....i tried using a normal fan without much success...but this heat activated fan is interesting...

now i just need to find stompies/big wood pieces

wood going to be wet now and takes long to dry

unless you can find dry wood

Sorry, yes those fans work. You don't feel the draft from them, but it moves stuff and makes a difference, hence me buying a second. Now I send the heated air to two different parts of our sorta open plan living area

I bought one about 3 weeks ago (2-bladed version). Works like a bomb and is dead quiet.

When it arrived, I tested it by putting it on an electric stove plate. Within 30 seconds or so it was going and after 2 mins it was cranking at serious rpms. I removed it from the plate and put it on a cold granite kitchen surface where it continued to spin for the next 10 minutes.

I have a Morsø so what I've been doing is to run this in conjunction with a metal kettle on the stove top. I fill up the kettle and place the spout in front of the fan blades. Anyone on the highveld knows how dry our winters are and the fan does a great job at circulating the humidified warm air and I'm convinced it results in less wood usage as well. Later on I open the door to the fireplace room and the fan moves the air through the passage.

It certainly doesn't blast air with force but if you hold your hand in front of it when it's going, you can definitely feel it pushing air. Loving mine so far.

PS, you need to have it on a hot surface (basically only works with the enclosed fireplaces). Will not work in front of an open fireplace.

Bought swarthaak some time back. Was the only dry pieces I had left after a week and even the undercover wood got wet from sideways rain.

But woah, some of these pieces are huge. Burns very nicely though. Doesn't work to get a fire going but once going for a while these are great.

I take wet wood from a pile in the rain and toss it straight in the stove..burns fine. Wood is only properly wet if the tree was alive recently..
