Is there any good open source firewalls? Something that can be made to work on FreeBSD preferably.

I use a Cyberoam CR50ia at work . But I need something for home use.

Thanks, will check it out.

I wanted to use FreeNAS as the base installation. I don't want to dedicate a whole box to one application. I don't think the wife will take well to a server rack in the lounge. I would be pretty cool though.

What you can do is to run a lot of virtualized servers on one box.

Proxmox or VMware can help with that.

I'm planning on converting my current Smoothwall to a virtual PC, and have another virtual Linux PC running, for my http, ftp and email server. And maaaybe a virtual Windoze PC for them torrents/downloads :D

That sounds awesome. Drive space is expensive again, sure a 1-2TB drive is cheap, but if one of them dies it is allot of data that is gone. The risks as has increased allot.

How will you handle storage for that? That's the reason I wanted FreeNAS for the base. I suppose I still could mange that part with it if use iSCSI.

Try Pfsense, its FreeBSD based and very robust.
