Firewalls - Use them!

So you were in Rob's List then ??? ;).
But true dat ... used to be active on Fidonet back then ... met a few of the BB folks in real life.

tibby.dude,

The one “forum” that evokes fond memories was called The Holodeck.
The Deck was family. We had regular “meets” on Fridays at different venues where one got to get to know the people and put faces behind the names.
Occasionally we had huge “meets” and partied till you dropped at someone’s house.

I was a lot younger then, and also slime-o-theed everyone and anything.
One of the founding members, Ric Beattie (rip), took me “under his wing” and taught me the finer things in life – like manners – ;)

Keep Well

Back to the Topic.

As a minimum for the average non-technical home ADSL User, I would recommend the following.

Have your Router Firewall enabled. DO NOT DISABLE it to get things to work. P2P etc etc.

Have your WINXP Firewall enabled, and dont let your kids on with administrator because they press OKAY when game installs open up Ports

Run an Anti-Virus Application.
Keep your machine updated with all the Latest Microsoft Patches.
Run an Anti-SpyWare application.

Your Anti-virus, SpyWare and Windows Updater should be enabled for auto-Updating. DAILY.

I also shut down my machines when I go to work and switch off the Router.

Checkpoint/Cisco/Netscreen

So slimothy:

I Take it that you are running Checkpoint VPN-1 NGX / Cisco PIX or a Netscreen box to keep you little world clean ??? Because in the real world you need something more that just a freeware app. to keep the nasties out.

Ever checked the warez sites.... Never use thse big brands on their own, that the first to be hacked. For security, the lesser known is much better, then the hacker does not know what to expect.
