no, it wont work. (in reply to farquaon)

you will need to get a cable that is 6 pins on one side and 4 pins on the other side. Dont panic, they are electrically compatable, there are 4 data pins, the other 2 pins (in a 6 pin cable) are for carrying voltage, anything up to 40 volts, to power the device from.

if the f/w device only has a 4 pin connector, that means it will need to be plugged into its own ac/dc to get power.

laptops typically use 4 pin, desktops typically have 6 pin.
just get a convertor cable:-)

I already have the 4 to 4 pin DV cable. Now i want to connect it to my pc that has no firewire.

So buying a 6pin pci card and using the ac adapter for the video camera and connect to pc and video camera with the 4 to 4 pin DV cable would not work?

no, it wont.
you cannot stick a 4 pin cable into a 6 pin hole.
you DO NEED a 4pin-->6pin cable.
then, get a firewire pci card for your pc (they are dirt cheap comparatively speaking)

It wouldnt work. How are you going to plug a 4 pin cable into a 6 pin port? Get the 6 pin card and a 6 pin to 4 pin cable.

Then you can always use the 6 pin card for something like an external firewire hdd.

Cable - Firewire (IEEE-1394) 6-Pin To 4-Pin 4.5metre
3 Port FireWire PCI Card - 6-Pin

So that would work! Thanks guys.

Ah, i see...okay then, damn firewire!
You kidding? Firewire rocks esp wrt hdd's, camcorders, and data transfer. USB2.0 might be able to burst slightly higher than firewire 400 but for sustained transfer there's no contest. Then you get firewire 800 which makes both look slowwwww.

Plus its nice for making an ad hoc network. :)
