EDIT: As many have noted the phrasing was wrong. So..What was your 1st big buy;was it a need or a want and how much did you pay for it.
Bonus question - Are you still using it.

1995 - Aiwa Hi-fi (still have it, only Aux works though. Great for PC sound output) Had a programmable 3 CD drawer with lights, double deck tape, etc.R3600
and (same day) - Adidas Tortions tekkies R400

This is so ridiculously subjective it's not even funny. I've bought both a house and a car that could be considered as "big" buys, but I didn't do either out of a want to spoil myself, but rather a need for reliable, safe transportation and because buying a house is cheaper than renting in my case. I recently bought a fairly good home theater system which could be considered a big buy by some (Not by others, obviously) and I spoiled myself a bit there, but that's about it.

Ya treat yourself isn't the correct phrase, anyway my 1st big buy was my ford fiesta, R90,000. Thing is still powering on 3 years later, not a single days trouble :D what a fanstastic buy

a whole bunch of PC's over the years... too many to count or mention...

first real big buy: Mini Cooper S - R209 000... still driving it, and love it more and more with every day...

Wife & kids == millions.

Yes, still using them - no wait, they're using me :).

my xbox when i was quite young. I think it was R600, I had saved for ages for it.

Turned out to be quite expensive since I needed everything cause my previous pc was outdated and that was after harddrive prices skyrocketed.

1tb harddrive
i3 2120 (really wanted i5 but could not afford)
gigabyte z68 motherboard
zalman z7 plus case
8gb ddr3 ram
DVD ROM

Eh, what else was there? Can't remember.

Big ie. something you would normally not have been able to afford which ofcourse is subjective to your finances.

eg. My big buy would be a car.
