First Bike Advice ... +- R30K

Hey guys ...

Thanks for all the advice so far ... The only reason I am going for a sport/super bike look is cause I like the feel (I have sat on many bikes and those felt the most natural)


I saw a nice 2008 CBR 650 with a custom pearl white paint job and an aftermarket exhaust for 55K but I am not sure if that is a rip or not (bike looks pretty clean but couldnt get a hold of the owner)
 
Superbikes are fun for sure, but they are not the best commuters and are really crappy for longer distances .. I did PE to East London and back again on the same day on my superbike, I knew all about it the next day.. :p (and my old style bike isn't nearly as cramped as the newer superbikes).

It's also worth noting that maintenance costs can be a lot higher on a superbike.
Personally if I needed to use my bike as a daily commuter I would sell it and replace with something like an Africa Twin or Transalp.

You mean a CBR600?

Why not look at the Honda Hornet or the Kawasaki Er6 series? I started on the Hornet and think it's an excellent bike. Same engine as the CBR almost

Yeah I meant the 600 ... Sorry for the mistake ...

I haven't actually seen a decently priced hornet ... I will keep looking


The guy with the CBR says he will even take it to a bike shop and have it assessed for me from his own pocket
 
If you are gonna buy a secondhand bike, if you can, take someone with that knows about bikes. Check things like fork seals, chain wear, brake wear, signs of it having been dropped and so on. And then before you buy the bike, buy the gear, jacket, gloves, helmet, boots as a minimum

I got myself a hornet a month ago. Paid just over R40k for it.
It's my first bike, I respect it and remember that the bike has no limits, I do. If you are responsible a 600cc should be fine.

Im not sure what your location is but there are a few in Gauteng if you check Gumtree.

Some guy selling is 2008 with 18000kms on the clock for R42500. That's a pretty good price

If I wasnt getting the Triumph Street Triple, I would have picked it up. I traded my Hornet in for R45k 5 months ago with similar mileage and age so if you can, grab this.

The Aprilia RS125 wont carry 155kgs. Your only option is a 600 as a minimum in my opinion.

Kawasaki ER6N/F (Good luck finding them at the moment, particularly the N)[sup]1[/sup]
BMW F650GS (2000 - 2007)
BMW G650GS (2008 - )
Honda Hornet
Honda NC700X (Extremely frugal - though out of your price range)

The pre '08 BMW F650GS is a single cylinder, just like the G650GS. Difference is that the F650GS engine is a Rotax engine and they are considered bullet proof. The G650GS's engine is not a Rotax.

[sup]1[/sup] The Kawasaki KLR650, KLE650, ER6N and ER6F all use the same engine. Difference is the ER6N is a naked (standard bike), the ER6F is a faired version (looks almost like a super bike), the KLE650 is a road orientated dual sport and the KLR650 is a dirt orientated dual sport but fairs well on the tarmac.

Except that it actually is, tsk tsk :p
Its only assembly that occurs in China, the parts are still made/designed by Rotax and BMW. And after 2011, assembly came back to Europe

Gumtree. I don't know about you, but I loathe Gomboem. I regularly check bikefind.co.za, autotrader.co.za and buymybike.co.za for 2nd hand bikes and there wasn't a listing for a ER6N there yesterday before I posted that - though haven't checked buymybike.co.za this week yet. ;)

I just purchased a bike from Gumtree. Private seller, financed though a bank, used a dealer as an intermediary. I love Gumtree because it's mainly private sales whereas bikefind and autotrader are dealers, hence more expensive.
