So im starting a new job 1 Dec. I now have a 20km (round trip) commute into Cape Town CBD with HEAVEY Traffic.

Was just wanting some advise as to a good starter bike. I have messed around with my friends bikes in highschool, but that was years ago. So i can ride.

I was thinking that since im going to be learning again. i should get myself something cheap. Like a Motomia spitzer or Monza.

Has anybody owned these bikes? And what are your experiences?

Go with a CBX 250, very reliable, perfect for these little commutes. You should be able to get a second hand one for R15-20k.

Spitzer or Monza's cheap.. but reliability.. mmmm.

Yea the CBX250 is great for commuting. You can also spend a bit more and pick up a CBR250, they are a hell of a lot of fun and very forgiving so excellent for new riders.

My plan was to get a cheap bike due to the fact im inevitably going to drop the thing at some stage. cheap to fix. my step dad is a old biker and can help me fix if anything goes wrong. He managed to talk me out of buying a zx4.

I was looking at getting used to riding for the next month or 2 then upgrading to a 400 Ninja or Blade.

Cool, so why not go directly for them? Or get whichever you want then just go for basic and advanced riding course, they're not that expensive and well worth it if you want to come out alive.

Thats a good idea actually. thanx. i will look into that soon. But the real learning comes from riding on the road.

KTM 390, BT the Duke for seating position when commuting or wait a bit for the RC if you prefer the super bike look :-)

Buy Japanese 250 or 300. Stay faaaaaaaaar away from Motomia. A friend at work bought one. That thing has given him endless problems. Firstly the seat fell off. Then he went for his license and the indicator stopped working on his 1 month old bike. Then he went over a speedbump on Witkoppen and his fairing and battery fell off the bike!! No freakin ways will I ever buy chinese!!!

oh eff it. im buying a 400. ill just take it easy and go for lessons.
I need a license. how long is the wait for a bike learners? In Cape Town. How much does it cost. Is it possible to get a date sooner?

Are you taking about a 400cc like a RVF, vfr, yzf, etc? If so, I would not buy a bike like that for a commute. They are generally old, not super reliable, and spares are scarcish.

Do you think you are going to want to ride not only on commute?

What's your budget? Factor in equipment. Don't cheap out of a helmet, and boots (broken ankles are a terrible injury)

Yip. I was looking at a ZX400 and there was a CBR. My budget is about R20k - R23k, im not going to skimp on the eqiopment. ill get a proper helmate jacket and boots all new. Was looking at spending about R3k on that.

Yes it is going to be used to commute but also for the occational breakfast run.

Spares can be bought. Craigs has a variety.

What are you recommending?
