Hi there

I would like to buy my first car, a Toyota Yaris, but not sure I could afford it. I'm able to spend roughly 2k on a monthly installment. It will probably have to be second hand.

Other than a Yaris, which other cars would be best for a 23yr old female, first time buyer? Any advice appreciated.

According to AA rates (fuel, tyres, insurance, maintenance) you're looking at around R4300 a month based on a R30k-R50k value @ 10000km/year including installments to run and pay for that car.

Well be sure girl, there are more costs to it than that related to owning a car.
Installment, expensive insurance, feul/maintainance/repairs, carwash, etc.

Maybe look at the newer small low feul economy cars or a very good pre loved vehicle.

Yeah - its not just the cost of the car to worry about, maintenance, repairs etc etc. It all adds up. How much is the car going for? Also because of your age group insurance will be at a premium. Also look at getting a alarm for the car if it doesn't come with one - your insurance payments will be less if the car has an alarm and some companies insist on one.

There's plenty other entry level cars out there which won't break the bank. Don't rush out and buy the first car you see :)

Your car should not be a 'fashion' statement--go with something that you are sure that you can afford on a monthly basis. There is nothing worse than seeing your salary being slowly eaten away by car expenses when you see your monthly bank statements.

My first car was affordable, reliable and cheap on the pocket--then I ruined it all by trading it in trying to keep up with the shiny and the fancy. Believe me, I did not enjoy driving that new car at all, knowing it was eating away most of my salary.

Affordability, reliability, re-sale value, safety and then, comfort in that order.

go for it... it's a nice car...:D

remember to add in insurance costs and petrol as well... but for R2k you are looking at a car from R50k to 70k...

You have 2k to spen on the instalment, please also factor in insurance, and petrol for a month when deciding the overall amount you will have to pay per month at a minimum when purchasing a car.

Most people dont take these into account, and its what causes problems. Especially the insurance, can sometimes be as much as your instalments. Also you under 25, gonna be a bit higher premiums.

Other cars, Mazda 2, Fiat 500, Polo, Hundai Getz (all i can think of at the moment)

Budget for insurance - if you have not had your license long it may be more than you'd expect.

I bought my first...financed car 6 months ago and here's what I found happened that i wish on no one!

Decide for yourself what you like, if you like a yaris T1, don't let someone else tell you a T3 is better lol.

Do your homework on the car
Shop arround, especially in these times...bargains are everywhere.
Ask lots of questions
Get road worthy certificate.
get FSH
Don't let dealer bully you into buying or setteling for a high interest!
Get your own Insurance
VERY IMPORTANT - tell them you'll do your own registration...about R500 instead of their claimed R1500!!!

Before you sign take papers home and let dad or BF or anyone read through it thoroughly!

Make sure about payment options...
Remember once you sign you can't turn back
Find out about service intervals, where to service, and waranties.

Check car for accident damage!

Other than that i can't think of more...enjoy the Yaris, my wife has one, also 23, And I drive it to work...keeps us the whole month on petrol, literaly R300 for the whole month!!!

Well thanx everyone for the valuable information. Yep, I didn't consider insurance and maintenance but I didn't know about cheaper cars except Tazz.

I basically want a small car that's not too new, but not so old that I'd need parts that just aren't available anymore.

A second hand Yaris T1 would be perfect for you. Its reliable, save, light on fuel and cheap to insure. Should comfortably make your R2000 limit.

Rather go for a Hyundai or a Kia. economical with great warranties.
