Good day guys.

I am planning on buying a brand new car that I primarily want to use it for Taxify. I have narrowed my options to Toyota Etios Spirit sedan and KIA Rio sedan.

What would be the best option from all aspects (i.e maintenance costs)?

Would a regular insurance cover (with passenger liability cover) be a viable option, or is there a special cover for Taxify kind of cars?

The Etios will be cheap to maintain but it will be falling apart in a couple of years, my cousin has one and every time you get into the car there is a piece of trim loose that you have to smack back into place, the car is only for private use, I can only imagine how it will be if used for business. Buy a Quest, it is still cheaper than a Rio.
Another option is the Suzuki Ciaz.

You will need to get a special license for public transport, and the vehicle will have to be insured as such.

All things considered I think you’d be better off with the Rio or something else that doesn’t look like an Uber. Otherwise you potentially have taxi violence and all that kak to deal with. Also, with the Toyota’s being popular as taxis, there’s the risk of theft/hijacking.

Thank you for your advice. I've also considered the Quest above the two, but my problem is that Quest is a lot pricier on finance as compared to the two (Excl. Balloon payment).

I was using the finance calculator from Toyota and KIA.

Valid points. How much does public insurance premiums and access vary from private. I got a R2100p/m quotation premium for a private car (1.2 KIA RIO Sedan, 2019), how much do you estimate the premium increase?

I have no idea honestly. Are you young? That’s a very high insurance rate for a relatively affordable care. How old are you?

Yes, I'm 21 and got my license a year ago.
Thought of insuring it under a family member's insurance (already has multiple cars) but I thought it would be a hassle seeing that I want to use the car for Taxify/uber.

You can still do that, but you have to nominate yourself as the primary driver. If you don’t and there’s an issue and they see it’s been used for taxify, you’ll have no recourse and no coverage.

What city are you in?

I won't be the driver, I have a driver for Taxify.

I am in Johannesburg.

I’m not sure then. I doubt it as it’s a business vehicle now, not sure how it would under your family insurance. Best bet is to ask an insurance company.

PM me your details if you like, I have contacts in the insurance industry.

Rubbish. My one gets abused by me (driving) and kids use it as a mobile jungle gym, and 4/5 years down the line it’s going strong.

Rio is a better car but nothing wrong with the etios
