First Credit Card

Don't do it! I hate my credit card..waiting to cut it up...

Heh, my expenditure reached an all time high during the Steam Summer Sale last month. It was the tipping point for me. Haven't used my credit card since then, and I've totally revised my spending habits on it now. From now on if I want to buy something online, I'll pay money into the card and buy like that. The point of me getting a credit card was to build up a good credit record, which up until now I wasn't really doing.

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting my first credit card (for online purchases and such) - who would be the best to go with? I bank with Absa, and their's seem pretty ****e compared to something like.. say virgin money? Any reason why?

Dont.

I got an FNB Cheque card for this purpose.
It is a standard cheque account with a VISA card. I can use it wherever a credit card can be used with the exception there must be funds available and not credit (unless you take an overdraft).

I pay my salary into this account.

Don't know if there are any pitfalls to this but it works for me.

I do the same, i have been credit card free for a year now. (I racked up huge amounts of debt on my credit card, never again!!)

How? A credit card is always the safest way to buy stuff online as you are mostly protected by VISA et al should something go seriously wrong.

Nothing wrong with those credit cards - you do not even have to deal with ABSA ... ever.

I had to go change my pin, had to go into the ABSA branch. Waited in line for 40 minutes. Got there, dude led me to a room with a phone. Phoned Virgin Money, did a security check for himself, then a security check on me. Then went back to the counter (this all took like 10 minutes). Then started the process of changing the pin which took another 10 minutes and a supervisor....

I did exactly the same.

I went into ABSA, waited 2min in a queue, bank teller phoned Virgin, did a security check, afterwards punched in my new PIN. Out of there in 10 min. No supervisor, no 10 min phone call to Virgin, quite painless actually.

I do this and I'm on the Fee-saver option. It's working out well so far. Zero bank fees is awesome!

Then sign up for FNB Connect for Talk, 3G & ADSL data and save on your phone bill too.

I generally only make my big purchases on my credit card. I have the money waiting in my cheque account, however I wait until the purchase is cleared onto my credit card, generally between 2-3 days depending on if its a friday, weekend etc when purchasing), then after it clears I wait another 2-3 days then pay it off. Shows that you can pay your debt that you owe quickly. since I have done this with my ABSA credit card, standard bank have phoned on several occasions and offered to over double my ABSA credit card limit if I take their credit card. It depends how you are able to manage your finances.

Get a master card if the only thing You need is purchase items online, but in the long run, "procrastination is like a credit card, You never know how much You have wasted until You receive the bill"

VC pay is good but it only works on certain phones and an iPad
