Hi,

I am not sure if this is quite the right section for this post but guess it qualifies under wealth.
I am completing my honours degree this year and have received a job offer - it starts 1 December.

I have lived in Pretoria my whole life and will be making a move to Johannesburg fairly soonish.
I am looking at the Fairland/Randburg area for a place to rent - however im not faimilar with Johannesburg suburbs at all so I have a question or two:

How safe is this area in general?
Any general tips/problems/catches I should look out for, both in the physical property and the rental contract itself? (this will be the first time I am living away from my parents house)

Thanks, any other comments and advice will be appreciated

congrants on your first job and welcome to the rat race!

Fairland and Randburg are both good areas but just a bit pricey.
Areas to avoid would be Weltevreden/HoneyDew seems to be quite a few house breakings in the 'secure' complexes there.

fairlands and randburg are fine..

Look at places like The corners (nice place).....

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for all the responses, sorry for not checking in much sooner.
Anyway I started on 1 December as I said but had chosen to stay with my parents for December and the rest of January.

The job is going very well and everyone has been extremely helpful with getting me started.

I guess I will speak to my collegues a bit about this when I'm back on 10th Jan (I got given leave days the same as my manager was taking).

I started looking for places to rent and was hoping to be in the R3500 to R4000 price range... after I looked at one place in Windsor East (yeah bad idea right) I have realised that, this is ofcourse, not Pretoria.

I have since decided that I can/have too go up to about R5000 a month - anything more than R5500 is starting to get a bit extreme and unaffordable.
What areas would you outright recommend - I think northcliff is ofcourse a good start but is extremely expensive.

So I guess what I want to know is, where would one whom wants quiet well behaved neighbours fit in best (I have to study for exams at night when I come home) and still feel very safe? - windsor east felt like a location to me.

Apart from Northcliff how are the following places: Northriding; Ferndale; Linden; Fontainebleau.

Finding a decent place to stay in a proper area, apart from the cost, is turning out to be more stressful and difficult than I imagined.

Okay Windsor is a bad area, it's dodgy as hell, so is the Cresta area unfortunately. Where do you work? You know Randburg is quite large and those suburbs aren't really near each other?
Here are a few places for under R5500, remembering you are one person too.

Thx, yeah - I dont know the area very well at all.
I work at FNB just off Beyers Naude.

The big ship like building?

North Riding, Northgate, Northwold and Sundown are another areas to look at - and of course Randpark Ridge which is literally down the road.

Yeah, thats the one.
Thanks for the feedback - now that im actively looking for a place to rent and have had the experience of going out to a place or two, it is more helpful than before to have your advice.

Ya Weltevreden park, Bromhof, boskruin, fairlands, linden, northcliff, RandparkRidge, RadioKop, DarrenWood,

Stay extremely far away anything remotely named "Windsor", other than that the other suburbs surrounding that FNB building are good.

Hey, I found a decent place to stay in Weltevreden Park
its 5km from the office and its a very decent price tho.
Thanks for the help.

good that you found a place man, just take note of the warning as per my comment above.
Coincidentally, I also work in the same building, so welcome :)
