First mountain bike which one to get?

So I've been thinking about getting a mountain bike to help along the cardio and weigh loss. I don't have a set budget, but I don't want to spent tens of thousands of rands on it. Probably a beginners one would be great that can at least do some of the basic tracks out there. Apart from the mountain bike what else should I be getting?
 
Gloves, helmet, padded cycling short, spare tube, puncture repair kit.

If you are going to be going off road for long periods then a camel pak would be advisable. If you use water bottles you will notice the first time you come down the mountain they will most likely fall out.

Also get a chain guard, it's a small piece of material with Velcro that protects the bike and stops the chain from rattling.

They also have an awesome classifieds which is perfect if you're not sure if you'll like it. Can also help in pointing you in the direction of trails in your area etc.
 
You'll also definitely have to set a budget of sorts. It's like buying a car - world of difference between a Tata and a Rolls. I reckon R10k should get you started nicely, especially if you go second hand. Spend some good money on gloves - you WILL fall. Also, pants -helps relieve the pain in your arse when you're on the bike for an hour or more.

First question: where do you live?

This will determine where you should go to get your first bike. You don't need much as its more about skill than what you ride. I still ride my entry level commuter mountain bike and the only trails I would not hit with her are anyway too technical for my skill level.
 
That's pretty broad question. Like the poster above said its sort of like buying a car, probably even more options on a MTB. So your question is like "Which car to get" with no details on what you need it for.

What do you intend on riding? jeep track? some technical stuff? Do you also want to do a few road races?

I guess around 10K the bike and then another 3K for those ?

I don't see myself spending more than 10K, I would guess second hand on the hub would be more than enough.

You should see the prices of some bikes. Lots go 2nd hand for like 60k... The average bike you see on the cape town trails like Tokia & Jonkershoek is worth 30k plus.

I haven't looked at the spec but those brands are ok mind you its not so much the brand as each doesn't really make much besides the frame. All of the components usually come from Shimano or SRAM. At those prices it is going to be pretty entry level. I'd suggest getting a year old bike 2nd hand on thehub or spending a few more bucks for a similar bike from your local bike shop (LBS). You will most likely get far superior service and advice than from the high teenagers working at Sportsmans.

R10K is not much for a bike. While my bike is only worth R5K (very entry level), my kit is insured for R7K (that my helmet, glasses, hydration bag, tools and shoes).

My next bike will be in the R25-30K range and that is not going overboard.

Beyond true. My favourite is choice a wheel size and be a dick about it :) .... on The Hub the two fastest ways to start a chain fight is talk about lube and why 29"er is better than 26"
